The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Enel X Way’s JuiceBox Level 2 residential EV chargers after receiving complaints regarding electrical arcing and thermal events that could potentially lead to fires. The investigation follows multiple incidents, including an explosion and vehicle fires reported by JuiceBox users. Additionally, Enel X Way has announced it will cease operations in the U.S. and Canada, which could impact the charger app and supporting software.

Key Highlights

  • Six complaints filed regarding Enel X Way JuiceBox chargers.
  • Reports include an explosion in a garage and a car catching fire while charging.
  • Ceasing of operations in North America announced by Enel X Way, impacting support services.
  • NHTSA’s Preliminary Evaluation aims to assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received six complaints alleging failures of Enel X Way’s JuiceBox Level 2 residential EV chargers. One complaint states that charging their vehicle with a JuiceBox led to an explosion in their garage, causing a fire that destroyed the home. Another individual reported that their car caught fire in the driveway while using the JuiceBox charger. Four other complaints involved electrical malfunctions, such as circuit breakers tripping and disruptions to electric vehicle charge cycles.

ODI also noted a communication sent to charger owners on October 2, 2024, which was posted on Enel X Way’s website, announcing that Enel X Way North America would cease operations in the United States and Canada on October 11, 2024. This development may also impact the functionality of the JuiceBox charger app and related supporting software.

To assess the potential safety-related issues, ODI has opened a Preliminary Evaluation to evaluate the extent, frequency, and safety implications of the reported incidents, including those related to the app and software functionality. Interested parties can review the ODI reports by visiting NHTSA.gov. The evaluation aims to determine the necessary actions to ensure the safety of consumers using JuiceBox chargers.
