The Kia EV5 has achieved the maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, Europe’s leading independent vehicle safety assessment organization. The fully electric SUV demonstrated strong performance across all four evaluation categories, scoring 83% for adult occupant protection, 85% for child occupant protection, 74% for vulnerable road users, and 80% for safety assist technologies.
Highlights
- Euro NCAP awarded the EV5 its highest five-star rating following comprehensive crash and safety technology testing
- Adult and child occupant protection scored 83% and 85% respectively, with maximum points in side barrier impact tests
- Autonomous emergency braking performed particularly well in cyclist scenarios, contributing to the 74% vulnerable road user score
- The Electric-Global Modular Platform provides the structural foundation for the SUV’s safety performance
Adult Occupant Protection
The EV5’s passenger compartment remained stable during frontal impact testing. Dummy readings indicated good knee and femur protection for both driver and front passenger positions.
Side barrier impact tests earned maximum points. Front and rear seat assessments demonstrated effective whiplash protection in rear-end collision scenarios.
The SUV includes an advanced eCall system that automatically alerts emergency services following an accident. A secondary collision mitigation system helps prevent additional impacts after an initial crash event.
Child Occupant Protection
The EV5 scored highest in child safety testing at 85%. All critical body areas of child dummies received protection in both frontal and side impact scenarios.
The front passenger airbag can be deactivated to accommodate rear-facing child restraints. Euro NCAP confirmed that all child restraint types designed for the EV5 could be properly installed.
Vulnerable Road User Performance
Testing revealed good or adequate head and leg protection across the vehicle’s front surfaces for pedestrians and cyclists.
The autonomous emergency braking system responds to:
- Other vehicles in potential collision scenarios
- Pedestrians crossing or near the roadway
- Cyclists in traffic situations
- Motorcyclists sharing lane space
Euro NCAP noted particularly strong AEB performance in cyclist detection scenarios.
Safety Assist Technologies
The EV5’s advanced driver assistance systems contributed to the 80% safety assist score. Key technologies include:
- Lane Keeping Assist that corrects vehicle path during unintentional lane departure
- Intelligent Speed Limit Assist that identifies current speed restrictions
- Direct driver status monitoring to detect driver attention levels
- Seatbelt reminders for all front and rear occupants
Platform and Specifications
The high-strength Electric-Global Modular Platform provides the structural rigidity supporting the EV5’s crash performance. Kia designed the dedicated EV architecture to meet current safety and performance requirements.
The European-market EV5 features an 81.4 kWh battery paired with a 160 kW motor. Maximum WLTP range reaches 530 km (329 miles).
Efficiency technologies include regenerative braking, Kia’s heat pump system, and fast-charging capability that delivers 10-80% charge in 30 minutes. European deliveries began during Q4 2024.
