Labatt Breweries of Canada has made a significant investment of $5.47 million to expand its logistics operations with 10 new battery-powered trucks for Quebec. This marks the largest single order of VNR Electric trucks for Volvo Trucks in Canada, reinforcing Labatt’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. The addition also follows the recent purchase of Labatt’s first zero-emission mobile service repair truck for the province.

  • Supported by $750,000 from the Canadian government and $875,000 from the Government of Quebec.
  • Each electric truck eliminates emissions equivalent to six conventional vehicles, totaling a reduction equivalent to 60 cars.
  • Fleet features Volvo VNR Electric trucks with a range of up to 280 km and a towing capacity of 80,000 lbs GCWR.

Labatt’s investment in the electric truck fleet has been further boosted by contributions from both federal and provincial governments. The Government of Canada contributed $750,000 through the Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emissions Vehicles (iMHZEV) program, while the Government of Quebec provided $875,000 under the Écocamionnage “Part 1 – Acquisition of technologies” program.

The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, praised Labatt’s commitment, stating, “Electrifying transportation is a powerful way to tackle climate change. By integrating electric vehicles, companies like Labatt are taking meaningful steps to reduce their ecological footprint—efforts that deserve recognition and encouragement.”

The Volvo VNR Electric trucks offer a range of up to 280 km powered by four battery packs with 300 kWh of usable energy, producing 455 horsepower with a maximum torque of 4,051 lb./ft. Additionally, the trucks come with a towing capacity of 80,000 lbs GCWR, making them ideal for Labatt’s distribution needs in Quebec. The new fleet reduces emissions equivalent to six conventional vehicles per truck, resulting in a combined reduction equivalent to 60 cars.

At Labatt’s Montreal distribution center, the trucks average 50 km per day, while at Bois-des-Filion, they average 110 km per day. The deployment of the electric fleet is supported by charging infrastructure, which includes three single-port and two dual-port ABB Terra 54 and Terra 124 stations in Montreal, and one single-port and two dual-port stations in Bois-des-Filion.

Labatt has ensured its delivery teams received extensive training on operating the new electric trucks. Driver feedback has been highly positive, with many highlighting the ease of driving, excellent cabin visibility, and quiet operation of the vehicles.
