Lexus NX PHEV Gains DC Fast Charging, Larger Battery

Lexus revealed a redesigned NX with a new-generation hybrid system and a plug-in battery adding 8 percent output and 30 percent capacity, plus DC fast charging support. Global launch from late 2026.

Lexus has revealed a redesigned NX compact crossover built around a new-generation hybrid system and a plug-in hybrid battery that the company says increases output by 8 percent and capacity by 30 percent, with the capacity gain listed at 8 percent for North America. The updated model is scheduled to reach global markets from the end of 2026. Lexus reports cumulative NX sales of approximately 1.9 million units across more than 90 countries and regions as of the end of July 2026, since the nameplate debuted in 2014 as the brand’s first compact crossover SUV. The plug-in NX 450h+ adds support for DC fast charging and targets more than 40 miles of EV range in EPA mode for North America.

Highlights

  • Newly developed lithium-ion battery for the plug-in NX delivers 8 percent more output and 30 percent more capacity (8 percent in North America), with DC fast charging support and a power-operated charging lid
  • Plug-in system output of 288 to 322 horsepower (215–240 kW), with 0 to 62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 6.0 seconds
  • EV range targets of more than 40 miles in EPA mode (North America), more than 62 miles (100 km) in WLTP mode (Europe), and more than 87 miles (140 km) in WLTC mode (Japan)
  • Floor rigidity increased approximately 25 percent and suspension tower rigidity approximately 30 percent

What Changes in the NX Hybrid System?

The NX carries a completely redesigned hybrid system that Lexus says advances both driving and fuel-efficiency performance. The powertrain adopts an e-Axle integrating the transaxle, motor, and power control unit into a more compact, lighter, lower-center-of-gravity package. Low-electrical-loss silicon carbide power semiconductors in the inverter further improve efficiency, according to the company, while higher battery output supports greater dynamic performance. The new-generation hybrid system also benefits from enhanced ECU performance, which Lexus says enables more coordinated motor control and reduces engine start-up vibration during EV-to-HEV transitions.

Newly Developed PHEV Battery

The plug-in variant receives a newly developed lithium-ion pack. Beyond the output and capacity gains, support for DC fast charging substantially reduces charging time, the company reports, and a power-operated charging lid is added.

The pack’s cell layout changes from a longitudinal to a transverse arrangement. Lexus says the change increases lateral rigidity across the body, while a lower battery mounting position lowers the center of gravity — both contributing to handling and stability rather than energy storage alone.

Chassis and Body Refinement

Lexus reinforced the front and rear ends, added a new floor cross member, and introduced additional reinforcement along the tunnel ridge, increasing floor rigidity by approximately 25 percent. Redesigned suspension towers with integrated structural components improve tower rigidity by roughly 30 percent.

Newly adopted shock absorbers with ultra-low-speed valves generate damping force in response to minute suspension movements on vehicles without the Adaptive Variable Suspension system. Steering wheel diameter drops 0.4 in (10 mm) to 14.2 in (360 mm), paired with a Variable Rack Gear across all packages. The E-Four electronic all-wheel-drive system adds revised rear motor control that maintains continuous AWD operation in straight-line driving, not only during launch, wheel slip, and cornering. A new brake control system applies subtle braking during cornering to stabilize yaw and roll during abrupt maneuvers.

Tuning was conducted at Toyota Technical Center Shimoyama and at Germany’s Nürburgring, with suspension work extending to surrounding public roads and Autobahn speeds above 124 mph (200 km/h).

Chief Engineer on the Development Theme

Kunihiko Endo, Chief Engineer at Lexus International, framed the redesign around the brand’s “DISCOVER YOUR EDGE” theme:

“DISCOVER YOUR EDGE―rather than playing it safe and settling for ‘good enough,’ it means challenging yourself to explore new possibilities. With that vision in mind, we created a simple, clean cockpit, sporty driving performance further refined through electrification technology, greater flexibility in charging, and a comfortable cabin where occupants can select illumination and fragrances to suit their mood.”

Design and Cabin

The exterior evolves the “VITAL TECH” design theme, integrating headlamps, cornering lamps, and other functional elements into a mesh grille, and replacing chrome mirror caps and moldings with black finishes. Rear combination lamps introduce what Lexus calls its first Double L Signature. Nine exterior colors are offered, including the new ash-toned SONIC TELLUS and F SPORT-exclusive TITANIUM CARBIDE GRAY.

Inside, a 12.3-inch digital meter sits alongside a 14-inch navigation and multimedia display in a horizontal layout. Five interior colors are available, including the new ABALOS and F SPORT-exclusive PROMINENCE. F SPORT models add exclusive 20-inch aluminum wheels and red brake calipers.

A new Sensory Concierge function coordinates illumination, music, climate control, seat temperature, and fragrance across three modes — INSPIRE, RADIANCE, and REVITALIZE. Five fragrances are offered, with up to three cartridges installed in a generator located in the glove box.

Lexus Safety System+ Updates

The NX adopts the latest Lexus Safety System+, which Lexus says expands object detection field of view and range. Radar Cruise Control adds an Eco Drive Mode and map-linked deceleration support for stop signs, T-intersections, roundabouts, and toll booths. The Pre-Collision System widens its operating speed range for intersection cross-traffic scenarios. The Driver Emergency Response System gains the ability to bring the vehicle to a stop on the shoulder when activated on highways, and Blind Spot Monitor now detects bicycles and motorcycles. Lane Tracing Assist and the Driver Emergency Response System can operate while towing, with Blind Spot Monitor detection extended around the trailer. Availability varies by market and specification.
