Lucid, Nuro, Uber Partner on Robotaxis

Lucid, Nuro, and Uber are collaborating on a next-generation autonomous robotaxi program designed for Uber’s global ride-hailing service. This partnership brings together Lucid’s advanced electric vehicle technology, Nuro’s self-driving system, and Uber’s extensive network to create a premium, fully integrated autonomous ride experience. The initial launch is planned for a major U.S. city next year.

Key Highlights

  • A global robotaxi program is being created exclusively for the Uber ride-hailing platform.
  • Uber plans to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid vehicles equipped with the Nuro Driver™ over a six-year period.
  • The service will leverage the Lucid Gravity SUV, known for its long range and spacious interior.
  • Autonomy will be powered by the Nuro Driver™ Level 4 self-driving system.
  • The first launch is anticipated next year in a major U.S. city, with plans for expansion into dozens of global markets.
  • Uber is set to make multi-hundred-million dollar investments in both Nuro and Lucid.

A New Era of Autonomous Ridesharing

This strategic collaboration aims to redefine urban mobility by making autonomous vehicle technology accessible to millions of people worldwide. The program combines the strengths of three industry leaders to deliver a service focused on comfort, safety, and scalability.

According to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the partnership is set to “safely bring the magic of autonomous driving to more people across the world.”

The foundation of the new robotaxi is the Lucid Gravity, an all-electric SUV. Its software-defined architecture, significant range, and luxurious interior make it an ideal vehicle for a premium ridesharing experience. Marc Winterhoff, Interim CEO at Lucid, noted that the partnership validates Lucid’s platform as “ideal for autonomous vehicles” and marks the company’s entry into the multi-trillion-dollar ridesharing market.

Advanced Technology for Scalable Deployment

The autonomous capabilities will be provided by the Nuro Driver™, a Level 4 self-driving system. This technology integrates sophisticated AI-powered software with automotive-grade hardware. The hardware will be factory-installed on Lucid’s assembly line, with Nuro’s software being commissioned when the vehicle is activated by Uber.

Jiajun Zhu, Co-Founder and CEO of Nuro, stated, “By combining our self-driving technology with Lucid’s advanced vehicle architecture and Uber’s global platform, we’re proud to enable a robotaxi service designed to reach millions of people around the world.”

The first prototype of the Lucid-Nuro robotaxi is already undergoing autonomous testing at Nuro’s Las Vegas proving grounds.

Designed for Efficiency and Safety

The partnership is structured for success with a focus on high asset utilization, favorable operating costs, and proven safety. The Lucid Gravity’s estimated 450-mile EPA range minimizes downtime for charging, enhancing vehicle availability and operational efficiency.

The Nuro Driver™ is designed for rapid adaptation to new environments and vehicle platforms, which helps to shorten deployment timelines. Nuro is responsible for developing a comprehensive safety case, which will be validated through extensive simulations, closed-course testing, and supervised on-road trials to ensure the robotaxi operates safely and reliably.

With its presence in 70 countries and an average of 34 million daily trips, Uber’s platform provides the necessary scale to introduce the benefits of self-driving technology to a global audience. The vehicles will be owned and operated by Uber or its third-party fleet partners, available exclusively through the Uber app.
