Mahindra has unveiled its new, cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at the Chakan plant in India. This advanced site, part of Mahindra’s 2.83 km² Chakan manufacturing hub, focuses on producing next-generation Electric Origin SUVs. The facility underscores Mahindra’s dedication to sustainable manufacturing, leveraging renewable energy and innovative technologies. A significant portion of the company’s ₹16,000 crore investment plan for FY22–FY27, amounting to ₹4,500 crore, supports the development of this facility.

  • Comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem: The EV hub employs over 1,000 robots and advanced transfer systems, integrating skill development and targeting a 25% gender diversity ratio.
  • Sustainability focus: The plant operates as a water-positive, fully renewable energy-reliant facility.
  • Technological advancements: Incorporates Industry 4.0 technologies, including autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) and IoT-based monitoring systems.

The Chakan EV facility spans 88,000 m², featuring state-of-the-art automation and robotics:

  • Press Shop: Fully automated to ensure precision.
  • Body Shop: Equipped with over 500 robots and IoT-driven monitoring for real-time insights.
  • Paint Shop: Among India’s most advanced robotic systems, optimizing efficiency and quality.
  • Material Movement: Relies on AGVs and AMRs to streamline operations with safety and speed.

Cutting-Edge Battery Assembly

Mahindra’s battery assembly plant is among the world’s most compact and technologically advanced:

  • Patented processes: Utilizes lean module assembly and insulated pallet designs for durability and precision.
  • Advanced testing: Multi-layered tests simulate real-world conditions, with IP67 ingress protection and automated anomaly isolation.
  • Quality assurance: Employs a no-fault-forward strategy, ensuring superior performance and reliability.
