Michigan’s First NEVI EV Charger Operational

Michigan has launched its first fast charging station under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, marking a significant milestone in the state’s push for sustainable transportation. Located in Lansing, this charging station is part of the Rivian Adventure Network and is open to all EV drivers, providing a reliable charging option to support Michigan’s growing electric vehicle adoption.

Key Highlights:

  • Location: Meijer parking lot, 6200 South Pennsylvania Ave., Lansing, MI.
  • Features: Six direct current (DC) fast chargers, including one trailer-friendly charger.
  • Funding: Part of a $23 million initiative by MDOT and MIO to install 40 universal fast charging stations across the state.
  • Future Plans: Seven additional stations are in the design phase, with completion expected by early 2025.

This initiative aligns with Michigan’s broader goals to reduce emissions and establish a robust statewide EV charging network. Supported by the NEVI Formula Program, the station adheres to guidelines requiring proximity to alternative fuel corridors, the ability to charge at least four vehicles simultaneously, and a five-year maintenance commitment from partner companies.

Expanding Michigan’s EV Charging Infrastructure

Michigan is set to receive $110 million through 2026 as part of the NEVI Formula Program, helping fund over 100 fast charging stations. These efforts complement existing clean energy strategies, such as the MI Healthy Climate Plan and Charge Up Michigan, which together have secured over $150 million for building Michigan’s EV charging network.

“MDOT is committed to enhancing the charging network statewide to support our EV users,” said Bradley C. Wieferich, State Transportation Director. “Thanks to the NEVI program, we can expedite this network, reaching our goal of supporting 2 million EVs on Michigan roads by 2030.”

Acting Federal Highway Administrator Kristin White emphasized Michigan’s leadership in EV infrastructure, saying, “This work is expanding the state’s EV charging network, helping Michiganders and travelers reliably charge their EVs and helps achieve our goal of installing 500,000 publicly available EV chargers by 2030.”

Benefits for Communities and Drivers

The Rivian Adventure Network ensures that this station is powered by 100% renewable energy, further reinforcing Michigan’s environmental goals. The station’s accessibility and reliability aim to reduce barriers to EV adoption while boosting local economic development.

“The NEVI Program is helping Michigan build stronger, cleaner, and more connected communities,” noted Zachary Kolodin, Michigan’s chief infrastructure officer and director of the Michigan Infrastructure Office.

As Michigan continues to pave the way for electric mobility, the state’s first NEVI-funded charging station symbolizes its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and leadership in the automotive industry.
