The Chinese automaker NIO has advanced its electric flagship ET9 by incorporating ZF’s cutting-edge steer-by-wire system. This technology eliminates the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, ushering in a new era of software-defined vehicles. ZF’s integration of the latest steer-by-wire components into the ET9 not only enhances driving dynamics and comfort but also reinforces its position as a global leader in by-wire chassis systems.
Key Highlights:
- Steer-by-wire integration: ZF supplies the ET9 with a state-of-the-art steering wheel actuator, redundant steering gear actuator, and associated software.
- Enhanced driving dynamics: The system adjusts the steering ratio based on driving speed and conditions for improved maneuverability and safety.
- Strategic industry collaboration: The partnership between NIO and ZF, established in 2022, supports the evolution of smart, electrified mobility on a global scale.
- Global market expansion: Orders for steer-by-wire systems extend beyond China to key markets in America and Europe.
At the forefront of automotive technology, ZF is equipping the ET9 with a revolutionary steer-by-wire system that completely removes the mechanical link between the steering wheel and the wheels. Instead, a series of sophisticated actuators and sensors enable precise control and an authentic steering feel via a torque feedback unit. This system not only maintains the natural feedback from the road but also allows the steering ratio to be dynamically adjusted, ensuring optimal performance in varying driving scenarios. By eliminating the traditional steering column, the design also offers increased safety in the event of an accident.
Dr. Peter Holdmann, Member of the Board of Management at ZF and responsible for the Chassis Solutions Division, commented, “We are supplying customers with the steering of the future. With our production-ready steer-by-wire steering system, we are launching the era of the software-defined vehicle. With an entire portfolio of innovative by-wire technologies, we are a sought-after supplier and a key driver of future-oriented chassis technologies.” Similarly, NIO’s Principal Chief Engineer Danilo Teobaldi remarked, “At NIO, we are committed to delivering groundbreaking innovations that redefine premium driving experience. Steer-by-wire technology is a key enabler of software-defined vehicles, offering enhanced driving comfort, uncompromised dynamics, and future-proof technology.”

ZF’s innovative approach through its newly formed Chassis Solutions Division consolidates its expertise in electronic steering and braking systems. The division has already secured significant orders, including an agreement to supply brake-by-wire systems for nearly five million vehicles from a leading global manufacturer. With its comprehensive range of by-wire technologies, ZF continues to shape the future of intelligent chassis systems, positioning itself as an industry leader in the transformation towards software-defined vehicles.
