Octopus Energy’s Electroverse charging network has launched its dynamic Plunge Pricing scheme in France, its first international market. The program delivers discounts of up to 50% on public charging when wholesale electricity prices fall and renewable output is high. Drivers save roughly €5 per session during qualifying events.
Highlights
- Plunge Pricing is now live at 7,000 Powerdot ultra-rapid chargers across France, with more charging operators to follow
- Drivers can save up to 50% per charging session — approximately €5 — during high-renewable, low-price grid conditions
- Electroverse is connected to 97% of France’s 172,000 public chargers, covering nearly the entire national network
- The UK rollout of Plunge Pricing has collectively saved drivers nearly £100,000 since launching in 2024
How Plunge Pricing Works
Plunge Pricing links charging costs directly to grid conditions. When renewable generation — wind and solar — exceeds demand, wholesale electricity prices drop. Electroverse passes those savings to drivers in real time. France’s rapid expansion of renewable energy makes it a natural fit for the model.
The French launch is built on a partnership with Powerdot, the country’s largest public charging operator. Powerdot operates more than 11,500 charging points across Europe, including over 7,000 in France. Its network spans everyday retail locations such as supermarkets, restaurants, and shopping centers.
France as a Strategic Launch Market
Octopus Energy entered France in 2022. It has since grown to become the country’s fifth-largest energy supplier, serving more than 750,000 customers. The French retail arm recently secured a separate deal to supply Powerdot’s network with 100% clean energy.
That energy supply agreement reinforces the alignment between Plunge Pricing and France’s grid dynamics. As clean generation rises, discount events become more frequent — benefiting both domestic drivers and UK tourists traveling through the country.
Electroverse Network Scale
Electroverse now connects over 1 million drivers to more than 1.3 million chargers across 50 countries. The network has expanded significantly since its 2020 launch and operates with a single app and card, with no added fees.
Drivers can sign up for Electroverse here and download the app via Apple and Android app stores.
Powerdot’s European Expansion
Powerdot has raised nearly €500 million to expand its charging infrastructure across Europe. The company currently has more than 4,000 additional charging points under deployment continent-wide, including approximately 1,500 in France. Key commercial partners include Carrefour, Mr. Bricolage, and Accor.
The Plunge Pricing rollout marks an additional layer of commercial cooperation between the two companies. Both have signaled that further savings initiatives are in development.
