PowerCo Commissions Salzgitter Gigafactory for Battery Cell Production

PowerCo has commissioned its Salzgitter gigafactory, launching the European production of Unified Cells. The facility features renewable energy operations and serves as the strategic blueprint for Volkswagen Group’s global battery manufacturing.

PowerCo SE has officially commissioned the Salzgitter gigafactory, initiating the production of the first Unified Cells manufactured in Europe. This event marks a significant developmental step for the Volkswagen Group as it brings battery cell design and production entirely within European borders.

Highlights

  • Production of Unified Cells commenced on December 17, 2025.
  • The facility operates on 100% renewable energy from wind and solar.
  • Initial annual capacity is set at 20 GWh, expandable to 40 GWh.
  • The plant serves as a blueprint for future sites in Spain and Canada.

Strategic Importance for Volkswagen Group

The commissioning of the Salzgitter plant represents a central component of Volkswagen Group’s strategy to establish itself as a global technology leader in the automotive sector. CEO Oliver Blume noted that producing battery cells internally strengthens the company’s competitive position and reduces dependence on external suppliers.

PowerCo is projected to supply approximately 50 percent of the Volkswagen Group’s requirement for Unified Cells. The remaining demand will continue to be met by external partners.

The cells manufactured at this facility are scheduled for delivery to Volkswagen Group brands for final road testing. They are planned to debut next year in the Electric Urban Car Family across the Volkswagen, ŠKODA, and SEAT/CUPRA brands.

Unified Cell Technology

The Salzgitter facility produces the PowerCo Unified Cell, which utilizes a standardized architecture suitable for use across all brands and regions. This prismatic cell format allows for flexible integration of different cell chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC).

Performance Specifications

The initial production run focuses on NMC technology. These cells reportedly deliver approximately 10 percent higher energy density compared to previous generations.

The cell design is synchronized with Volkswagen’s new cell-to-pack battery system. This integration aims to improve vehicle range, efficiency, and overall performance.

Production Capacity and Expansion

Production at the Salzgitter site will ramp up gradually over the coming year. The first phase targets an annual capacity of up to 20 GWh, which equates to approximately 250,000 electric vehicles depending on battery size.

The facility is designed with the flexibility to double its capacity to 40 GWh if market conditions require increased output.

Global Standardization

Salzgitter functions as the lead plant for PowerCo’s expanding global network. The standard factory concept and operational experience developed here will be transferred to upcoming gigafactories in Valencia, Spain, and St. Thomas, Canada.

Personnel and technical knowledge are already being exchanged between Salzgitter and these international locations.

Sustainability Standards

The gigafactory prioritizes low-CO₂ manufacturing processes. The entire production line runs on renewable energy sourced from wind and solar power.

This commitment extends to energy-intensive areas such as clean and drying rooms, which traditionally rely on fossil fuels. Consequently, the plant is expected to emit up to 115,000 tons less CO₂ annually than comparable conventional factories.

Digitalization and Quality Control

The production process integrates high levels of automation with real-time data analysis. This approach is intended to enhance process stability, efficiency, and product quality.

Thousands of data points gathered from machine and building monitoring systems provide seamless traceability. These data streams form the foundation for AI-supported quality control measures throughout the manufacturing line.

Facility Specifications

Key data regarding the Salzgitter Gigafactory:

  • Groundbreaking: July 2022
  • Total Area: 69,000 square meters
  • Dimensions: Approximately 600m length, 350m width, 30m height
  • Maximum Capacity: 40 GWh (First stage: 20 GWh)
