QuantumScape Launches Eagle Line for Solid-State Batteries

QuantumScape inaugurated its Eagle Line in San Jose, a scalable production platform for solid-state lithium-metal batteries designed to support customer testing and enable gigawatt-hour-scale licensing.

QuantumScape Corporation (NASDAQ: QS) has inaugurated its Eagle Line at the company’s San Jose facility. The installation represents a suite of equipment, materials, and highly automated processes designed to serve as the production blueprint for the company’s solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. The event drew automotive OEM customers, ecosystem partners, and government officials.

Highlights

  • Eagle Line inaugurated at QuantumScape’s San Jose facility, featuring the company’s proprietary Cobra process for scalable separator production
  • Customer sampling and testing will be supported upon ramp-up, along with technology demonstrations and product integration efforts
  • Licensing model enabled as the line is intended to demonstrate scalable production for partners to manufacture at gigawatt-hour scale
  • Advanced development platform established to test further technology and process improvements at meaningful scale

Production Blueprint and the Cobra Process

The Eagle Line incorporates QuantumScape’s Cobra process, a method for producing the company’s proprietary QS separator. The process is designed to be highly scalable, forming the core of the production blueprint that licensing partners could replicate in their own facilities.

Upon ramp-up, the line will produce battery cells for:

  • Customer sampling and testing
  • Technology demonstrations
  • Product integration efforts

Commercialization Path Through Licensing

The Eagle Line is intended to demonstrate that QuantumScape’s solid-state technology can be produced at scale, a critical step in enabling licensing partners to build out manufacturing at gigawatt-hour capacity.

“The Eagle Line is a powerful platform to demonstrate scalable production of our solid-state technology and serve customer demand for better batteries,” said Dr. Siva Sivaram, president and CEO of QuantumScape. “This is the next major step in the commercialization of our technology.”

Engineering and Scale-Up Milestones

Dr. Luca Fasoli, COO of QuantumScape, noted that following deployment of the Cobra process, the team moved to scale up cell build processes to increase output, scalability, automation, and quality.

The Eagle Line will also function as a platform for developing and testing further technology and process improvements, supporting the company’s ongoing advanced development efforts.

QuantumScape’s solid-state lithium-metal battery technology is designed to deliver greater energy density, faster charging, and enhanced safety. For more information, visit www.quantumscape.com.
