Range Energy’s advanced eTrailer System, designed to transform diesel trucks into hybrid electric vehicles, recently aced tough winter testing in Northern Michigan. Conducted in subzero temperatures on icy, snowy roads, the tests showcased the system’s ability to boost safety and performance. Key findings include shorter braking distances and better anti-jackknifing protection, proving its reliability in extreme conditions. This milestone highlights Range’s role in pushing trucking electrification forward with seamless integration and enhanced driver confidence.

Key Highlights

  • Enhanced Safety: The system cut braking distances and improved stability, even on ice, working smoothly with ZF’s braking and control tech.
  • Traction Control: Range’s in-house system kept trailers steady on slippery surfaces, aiding drivers without compromising handling.
  • Driver Feedback: Operators praised the system for making trucks easier and safer to drive in harsh weather, boosting predictability.

Range Energy wrapped up its winter trials in early 2025, putting its eTrailer System through the wringer in Northern Michigan’s brutal conditions. Engineers tested the setup—featuring a high-voltage battery, an electrified axle pumping out hundreds of kilowatts, and smart sensors—on low-friction surfaces like ice and snow. The goal? To fine-tune performance and ensure the system could handle real-world challenges. Data from sensors across the truck and trailer helped refine the controls, delivering a setup that responds to driver inputs without needing a tractor-trailer data link.

The testing zeroed in on critical safety features. Braking performance stood out, with the system slashing stopping distances while playing nice with ABS. Anti-jackknifing tests showed the trailer staying in line, even in variable conditions. “Our recent winter testing confirmed that Range’s system significantly enhances safety and performance under adverse conditions,” said Ali Javidan, CTO and Founder of Range Energy. The system’s next-gen sensing tech also skips invasive trailer mods, keeping the classic kingpin design intact—a win for scalability and manufacturing.

Founded in 2021, Range Energy is speeding up the shift to electric trucking. Its system not only cuts fuel use and emissions but also powers refrigerated trailers electrically, slashing diesel costs. Backed by big names like UP Partners and Yamaha Motor Ventures, Range is proving its tech can integrate with any commercial tractor-trailer, offering fleets a practical path to electrification without disrupting operations.
