Rivian is preparing to release a new software update designed to provide drivers with more charging options and real-time information. The update aims to simplify long-distance travel in an electric vehicle by expanding charging network integration and providing seamless connectivity for a more predictable journey.
Key Highlights
- The next software update will add real-time charger availability and speeds for popular charging networks.
- Plug & Charge functionality is expanding to the Electrify America and IONNA networks, allowing for seamless connection and payment.
- Rivian drivers now have access to more than 50,000 DC fast charging stations across North America.
- Advanced in-vehicle software and navigation tools provide detailed insights into energy use, battery health, and range estimation.

Real-Time Information and Expanded Networks
Rivian’s in-vehicle navigation and mobile app already provide drivers with critical charging information, including available chargers, power levels, and Charging Scores that indicate a station’s reliability based on recent user sessions. The upcoming software update will enhance this by integrating real-time charger availability and speeds from two additional popular networks: Electrify America and IONNA.
This update also extends the Plug & Charge feature to these networks. This functionality allows drivers to simply connect their vehicle to a compatible charger to initiate a session and handle payment automatically, removing extra steps from the process. This will apply to Electrify America’s more than 5,000 chargers and all upcoming IONNA locations.
Extensive Charging Network Access
To provide peace of mind during road trips, Rivian ensures its drivers have access to a comprehensive charging infrastructure. The network includes more than 50,000 DC fast charging stations in North America, covering major travel corridors and remote destinations alike.
This access includes the company’s own Rivian Adventure Network, a growing system of fast, reliable chargers powered by 100% renewable energy. In addition, Rivian drivers can utilize the Tesla Supercharger Network, further expanding their options for cross-country travel and exploration.

Advanced Software and Navigation Tools
The vehicle’s software acts as a comprehensive travel companion, offering helpful insights to make EV travel easier. The Energy app, accessible from the vehicle or a mobile phone, provides immediate data on energy use. A feature called Trip Target quickly calculates the necessary charge for a destination and alerts the driver once the vehicle is ready. The software also helps drivers understand energy consumption variables, such as elevation and temperature, and allows for on-demand battery preconditioning.
Rivian Navigation with Google Maps integrates trusted traffic, routing, and ETA features with Rivian’s custom EV navigation. Drivers receive timely notifications about traffic and accidents while having the ability to explore tappable points of interest along their route.
The system’s custom EV navigation includes a Range on Arrival estimate, which shows the remaining battery percentage at a destination. This calculation is specific to the vehicle and its driving environment, adjusting for factors like accessories, gear, or trailers.
