Simplifying Public EV Charging for Disabled Drivers

Motability Operations has partnered with innovative tech company Paua to launch Motability Go Charge, a new solution to simplify public EV charging for over 48,000 Motability customers. This new initiative aims to improve the charging experience for disabled EV users across the UK, offering a streamlined, one-stop solution for accessing and paying for public chargepoints.

Key Highlights:

  • Motability Go Charge App: Allows users to check real-time availability of chargepoints, filter by connector type and speed, track charging costs, and receive support for chargepoint or payment issues.
  • Extensive Coverage: Provides access to over 70% of all rapid chargepoints across the UK, with no subscription fees and no pre-authorization required.
  • Positive Pilot Results: Show that a simplified payment solution is crucial for an inclusive EV transition.
Simplifying Public EV Charging for Disabled Drivers

Motability Operations, serving over 760,000 customers through the Motability Scheme, has introduced Go Charge to enhance the EV charging experience. The app simplifies the process by providing real-time information on chargepoint availability, filtering options, cost tracking, and immediate support for any issues encountered during charging. This user-friendly approach is designed to overcome the barriers faced by disabled drivers, especially those without access to off-street parking.

Government’s ZEV Mandate and EV Transition

As the UK government’s ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) mandate approaches, the production of EVs is increasing, leading to fewer and more expensive petrol and diesel options. The transition to EVs poses specific challenges for disabled drivers, many of whom lack access to off-street parking and affordable public charging options. Motability Operations is committed to supporting its customers through this transition by partnering with startups like Paua to pilot innovative schemes.

Streamlined Payments with Go Charge

The Go Charge app and card streamline EV payments at over 45,000 chargepoints from various operators, including GRIDSERVE, Source London, ChargePlace Scotland, ESB, Geniepoint, Shell Recharge, and Osprey. This extensive network covers more than 50% of all chargepoints in the UK and 70% of all rapid chargepoints, with plans to further expand coverage.

Customer Feedback and Expansion Plans

During a nine-month pilot with 5,000 customers in 2023, Motability Operations gathered extensive data and insights. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with nearly 12,000 transactions completed and high satisfaction rates. “Our customers have told us that paying for public charging is difficult, with the need for multiple app downloads, complicated payment systems, and costly subscriptions all creating a barrier to the transition to EV,” said Andrew Miller, Chief Executive of Motability Operations.

Future Prospects

Following the successful pilot, Go Charge will now roll out automatically to every EV customer on the Motability Scheme. Customers will receive the card and user guide upon ordering their EV. Motability Operations is also investing £300 million to support the affordability of EVs and collaborating with local authorities to plan accessible public charging infrastructure.
