Beyond agility, the testing program is aimed at delivering a refined cabin experience, smart says. Engineers have conducted noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) validation across a range of environments, including a wind tunnel, an acoustic chamber, a temperature-controlled four-post rig, proving grounds, and public roads. The work has covered wind noise, road noise, powertrain NVH, thermal NVH, squeak and rattle, and sound-quality optimization.

Engineers are also testing tire compounds on rough asphalt, grooved concrete, and high-speed straights, working to balance low rolling resistance for maximum range against noise reduction.

Durability Testing and the Next-Generation tridion Safety Cell

To confirm long-term reliability, the smart #2 has been subjected to durability testing over bumpy roads, continuous undulations, and potholed urban streets. Targeted impact tests simulated common city-driving scenarios, including mounting curbs and striking deep potholes. smart says refining chassis rigidity and structural stress points is intended to support the vehicle’s durability over time.

The next generation of the tridion safety cell combines compact exterior dimensions with a structure the company says is built to meet current safety requirements, providing occupant protection and stability.

Design Continuity with the Original fortwo

As an all-electric two-seater city car, the smart #2 is designed to navigate modern urban environments. The car carries forward the “wheels-at-the-corners” stance that has defined the smart fortwo’s space-maximizing design since its first generation, giving it a geometric foundation for maneuverability in the tightest city spaces. The exterior styling comes from the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, whose collaboration with smart’s R&D teams is intended to carry the design through to the finished production model.
