U Power Limited, a global leader in green smart energy grid innovation, has partnered with Sumitomo Mitsui Auto Leasing & Service (Thailand) to deliver Southeast Asia’s first fleet of battery-swapping taxis to Phuket, Thailand. Through its Thai subsidiary, USWAP Co., Ltd., U Power has provided 21 battery-swapping-enabled MG EP vehicles to Auto Drive EV Public Company Limited, a leading mobility service provider in Thailand. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation in the region, aligning with Thailand’s goals for electric vehicle (EV) adoption and carbon neutrality.

Key Highlights

  • First battery-swapping taxi fleet in Southeast Asia
  • 21 battery-swapping-enabled MG EP vehicles delivered
  • Partnership between U Power, Sumitomo Mitsui, and Auto Drive
  • Deployment in Phuket, a major tourist destination
  • Uses U Power’s UOTTA technology for 3-minute battery swaps
  • Aligns with Thailand’s EV 3.5 Policy
  • Aims to improve air quality and operational efficiency

The vehicles feature U Power’s proprietary UOTTA technology, which enables fully automated battery swapping in just 3 minutes. Unlike traditional charging, which can take hours, this system allows taxis to quickly return to service, reducing downtime and boosting efficiency for operators. This technology ensures uninterrupted service for passengers, making it a game-changer for urban mobility.

Phuket, a top tourist destination known for its stunning beaches, faces growing transportation demands. The battery-swapping taxis aim to reduce air pollution and enhance the island’s appeal by adopting smart EV solutions. This move not only supports environmental goals but also improves the experience for visitors and locals.

Johnny Lee, CEO of U Power Limited, stated, “This delivery is a milestone for USWAP and a leap forward for Southeast Asia’s EV transition.” A Sumitomo Mitsui representative added, “Our financing model makes this technology accessible, driving sustainable growth.” Dr. Akaranun Ariyasripong of Auto Drive noted, “This supports our goal of deploying 2,000 electric taxis by 2025.”

This project positions Thailand as an EV innovation leader in ASEAN. USWAP plans to expand its battery-swapping network across Thailand, focusing on taxis, trucks, and logistics fleets, supporting the country’s rapid EV market growth.
