Tokyo is rapidly moving toward electric mobility with the rollout of Japan’s first large-scale electric vehicle (EV) battery swapping network tailored specifically for commercial fleets. Ample, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Fuso, Mitsubishi Motors, and Yamato Transport, is spearheading this significant development, set to debut this fall.

Key Highlights:

  • 150 electric trucks and vans will be deployed initially across Tokyo.
  • A network of 14 strategically placed battery swapping stations will support fleet operations.
  • The initiative leverages a grant from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aimed at advancing EV infrastructure.
  • Ample’s technology enables battery swaps in under five minutes.
  • The project aligns with Japan’s target of a 46% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

The Japan Commercial EV Battery Swapping Project addresses key operational needs of commercial fleets, ensuring minimal disruption to daily logistics.

Fleet Electrification Made Efficient

Transitioning commercial fleets to electric power requires coordinated technological, infrastructural, and operational efforts:

  • Mitsubishi Fuso contributes its reliable eCanter trucks, specifically designed for heavy daily use.
  • Mitsubishi Motors supplies the compact Minicab-MiEV, ideal for efficient last-mile deliveries.
  • Yamato Transport, Japan’s largest logistics provider, is pioneering the deployment, testing battery swapping under actual operational conditions.

Ample’s battery swapping platform drastically reduces vehicle downtime, offering fleets rapid, flexible charging without changing operational routines. Each station can be rapidly installed, often in less than a week, without extensive infrastructure changes.

Promoting Sustainable Mobility

Supported by the Tokyo government’s Technology Development Support Project for Promoting New Energy, this initiative significantly contributes to Japan’s broader environmental objectives. Electrifying commercial fleets is essential for achieving substantial reductions in urban greenhouse gas emissions.

As Tokyo’s battery swapping network launches, Ample and its partners welcome additional collaborations with OEMs, logistics firms, and fleet operators interested in accelerating their shift toward sustainable, zero-emission transportation solutions.
