A recent survey conducted by SWTCH Energy reveals that U.S. multifamily residents are 2.5 times more likely to own an electric vehicle (EV) if they have access to home charging. The survey highlights the growing demand for sustainable lifestyles and the significant impact of property-level EV charging on residents’ decisions to drive electric vehicles. Despite the desire for eco-conscious living, the lack of charging infrastructure at multifamily properties continues to be a major barrier to EV ownership.
Key Highlights:
- EV charging access increases the likelihood of EV ownership by 2.5 times among multifamily residents.
- 62% of residents plan to own or drive an EV in the next five years when charging is available, compared to just 25% without access.
- 66% of residents believe EV charging benefits residential communities, and 67% say it would influence their decision to get an EV.
- 47.5% of non-EV owners cite the high cost of purchase/lease as a primary barrier.
- 31% of non-EV owners report a lack of charging at home as a significant deterrent.
- 82% of non-EV owners in multifamily properties lack access to at-home charging stations.
SWTCH Energy’s survey involved 1,567 intergenerational consumers from major cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami/Tampa. The results indicate that while multifamily residents are eager to adopt more sustainable lifestyles, inadequate charging infrastructure remains a key hurdle.
SWTCH Energy is working to address this issue by deploying over 10,000 EV charging ports across North America, focusing on multifamily buildings. Their innovative solutions aim to overcome challenges such as upfront costs and limited electrical capacity, making EV adoption more accessible for residents.
According to Sofia Berrada, Head of Strategy at SWTCH, “This data further shows that at-home EV charging for the over 44 million Americans living in multifamily properties is a critical component to achieving transportation electrification.”
SWTCH continues to lead the charge in expanding EV infrastructure for multifamily properties, helping residents, property owners, and operators achieve their sustainability goals in a cost-effective manner.
