VinFast Auto has officially announced its plans to commence construction of an integrated electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing site in Thoothukudi City, Tamil Nadu. This development marks a pivotal move towards bolstering green transportation in India through a strategic alliance with the Tamil Nadu State Government.
The initiation of this partnership, rooted in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on January 6, 2024, outlines an investment commitment of USD 500 million over five years for the first phase of the facility. This venture is a critical component of VinFast’s strategy to penetrate the rapidly growing EV market in one of the world’s largest economies.
The upcoming groundbreaking event, occurring just over a month post-MoU announcement, underscores VinFast’s rapid progression in its international expansion efforts. This facility is expected to generate approximately 3,000 to 3,500 local jobs, significantly contributing to Tamil Nadu’s socio-economic growth.
Projected to evolve into a premier EV production hub in the area, the Tamil Nadu plant aims for an annual production capacity of up to 150,000 units. Beyond serving the Indian market, this facility is strategically positioned to meet export demands across South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, aligning with VinFast’s global market aspirations.
Moreover, the establishment of this plant aligns with India’s ambitious goals to promote green transportation and reduce carbon emissions within the transport sector, aiming for 30% of newly registered private cars to be electric.
