Volkswagen will stop assembling the ID.4 electric SUV at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant starting mid-April 2026. The automaker is shifting the factory’s focus to higher-volume models, beginning with the all-new 2027 Atlas, which enters production this summer.
Highlights
- ID.4 assembly at Chattanooga ends mid-April 2026; existing inventory will remain available to U.S. customers, expected to meet demand into 2027.
- The second-generation 2027 Atlas begins production this summer and arrives at dealerships in the fall.
- A future version of the ID.4 is planned for North America, though Volkswagen has not disclosed a timeline or production location.
- Volkswagen is exploring a new model for Chattanooga assembly, targeting U.S. consumer demand and high-volume sales.
Chattanooga Pivots to Atlas
The Chattanooga plant will prioritize the launch of the redesigned Atlas, which has ranked as Volkswagen’s second-best-selling U.S. model for three consecutive years. The shift reflects the company’s broader strategy to concentrate factory resources on vehicles with stronger near-term sales volume in North America.
Volkswagen Group of America President and CEO Kjell Gruner framed the move as a long-term commitment to the Tennessee facility. “This strategic shift underscores the company’s commitment to Chattanooga and its workforce as we position the plant for long-term success and future product opportunities,” Gruner said.
ID.4 Production Wind-Down
Volkswagen characterized the decision as a response to ongoing challenges in the U.S. EV market. The company said the segment has required “measured decisions throughout the last few years to navigate this unpredictability.”
Model year 2026 ID.4 units already produced will continue to sell through dealer inventory. Volkswagen confirmed a future ID.4 variant is planned for the North American market but offered no specifics on timing, platform, or where it would be built.
Workforce Transition
Hourly workers in ID.4-specific roles will transfer to other positions within the plant based on seniority and in consultation with the local union. Volkswagen is also offering a special early retirement program for eligible employees.
New Model Under Consideration
The automaker said it is exploring pathways to introduce a new vehicle at Chattanooga, designed specifically for U.S. consumers and aligned with its high-volume production strategy. No further details have been announced.
