Walmart and ABB E-mobility have begun installing A400 All-in-One DC fast chargers at seven Walmart locations in metropolitan Phoenix, alongside initial sites in Colorado, Florida, and Georgia. The deployments mark the start of a planned nationwide rollout that will embed high-power EV charging at Walmart and Sam’s Club properties across the United States.
Highlights
- A400 chargers deliver up to 400 kW, or 200 kW split across two vehicles charging in parallel
- Phoenix metro slated for nine Walmart sites and 38 A400 units in coming months
- Dual CCS and NACS connectors support all major U.S. EV models
- Walmart app integration enables charging session start through existing shopper interface
Phoenix Rollout and Site Specifications
The first A400 chargers are operational at Walmart stores in Mesa, Tempe, Apache Junction, and Queen Creek. Each unit can deliver the full 400 kW to a single vehicle or split that capacity into two simultaneous 200 kW sessions. The Phoenix metro buildout will reach nine Walmart locations and 38 A400 chargers in the coming months, according to the announcement.
Dual CCS and NACS connectors come standard, ensuring compatibility with vehicles built around either charging standard. ABB E-mobility says a full charge can be completed within a typical shopping trip, though the company did not specify session times for representative vehicle models.

Hardware and Grid Architecture
The A400 platform pairs the dispenser with ABB’s broader electrical distribution portfolio. Sites incorporate ABB’s ReliaGear switchboard, which the company says allows operators to add future energy resources such as battery storage with minimal downtime. ABB also supplies utility-grid integration support intended to ensure reliable power connections at each site.
Other A400 features highlighted by ABB include a 32-inch configurable display for branding and promotions, modular hardware architecture, and 99% uptime targeting. The company has previously deployed A400 chargers with PG&E across more than 35 California fleet locations, positioning the platform across both fleet and public retail use cases.
Retail Charging as Customer Strategy
Walmart operates more than 5,200 stores in the United States, and the company says 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart location. The retailer has been building toward a proprietary EV fast-charging network since 2023, when it first announced plans to install chargers at thousands of stores by 2030. The ABB partnership now anchors the hardware side of that program.
ABB cited industry data showing proximity to charging stations can lift store visits by up to 4%, framing the rollout as a customer loyalty play in addition to an infrastructure investment. Walmart customers will be able to start charging sessions through the Walmart app, integrating EV charging with the retailer’s existing digital shopping tools.

We’re building a convenient and reliable network that gives our customers the ability to charge their EVs quickly and affordably without having to change their daily shopping routine.”
Brandt Hastings, President North America at ABB E-mobility, said: “Launching in the Phoenix metro area is the first step in what will become the most ambitious retail charging rollout in the United States. Together with Walmart, we are combining trusted retail access with telecom-grade charging reliability, delivering infrastructure that meets the needs of drivers today and scales with demand tomorrow.”
