WJ Group, a top player in the highways sector, has made remarkable progress in cutting its carbon footprint by electrifying its fleet. Over the past three years, the company has reduced carbon emissions by an estimated 134 tCO2e, equivalent to 52,746 liters of diesel. This milestone aligns with WJ’s commitment to achieving Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2032, a goal verified by the Science Based Targets initiative. Partnering with Rightcharge, WJ has streamlined EV adoption, reduced costs, and boosted employee confidence in electric vehicles.

Key Highlights:

  • Carbon Reduction: WJ Group slashed emissions by 134 tCO2e through fleet electrification.
  • Cost Savings: Operational costs dropped significantly with EV integration.
  • Employee Confidence: Drivers are more confident adopting EVs, aiding fleet transition.
  • Award Recognition: WJ won the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Kier Transportation Supply Chain Awards.

WJ Group teamed up with Rightcharge, a leader in EV charging payment solutions, to overcome key barriers. Rightcharge’s system lets drivers use a single card to pay at over 70% of UK public charging points and reimburses home charging directly to energy accounts. This has cut costs by leveraging cheaper home rates and reduced the need for workplace charging, minimizing downtime. Detailed dashboards from Rightcharge also track emissions and charging behavior, supporting WJ’s carbon goals.

The initiative has driven progress toward a 100% electric company car fleet, with 43% of its 70 cars now fully electric and 57% plug-in hybrids. Employees benefit from clearer, more convenient charging, boosting EV adoption. WJ’s efforts earned the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2025 Kier Transportation Supply Chain Awards.

Paul Aldridge, WJ’s Sustainability Director, noted that home charging supports a greener energy mix, while Rightcharge’s CEO, Charlie Cook, praised the partnership’s environmental impact. WJ Group’s success highlights how businesses can cut emissions and costs simultaneously.
