Columbia, SC – ABB E-mobility, a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, has announced the start of production for its EV chargers at its newly established manufacturing facility in Columbia, South Carolina. The facility will be crucial in reducing delivery and lead times for DC fast chargers in the US, enabling charging developers, owners, and operators to roll out reliable chargers more efficiently.
A recent study suggests that the US will need to increase its charging infrastructure fourfold by 2025 and grow it eight times by 2030 to keep up with rising EV adoption. With the commencement of manufacturing in the US, ABB E-mobility is well positioned to support the growing demand for charging infrastructure.
The EV chargers produced by ABB E-mobility at its South Carolina facility adhere to the Buy America Act programs, including the proposed Buy America Act rules by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The charging solutions include the Terra 184, a compact, “all in one” system that provides up to 180 kW of power and is ideal for highway and heavy-duty vehicle applications.
Bob Stojanovic, Vice President for ABB E-mobility in North America, commented on the manufacturing milestone, saying, “This marks ABB’s leadership in the energy transition to electrification and our ability to support the growth of the e-mobility economy in the United States. The immediate need for expanding US charging infrastructure has been prioritized in our business, and we are committed to supporting our customers and the industry as a whole.”
ABB E-mobility has been a pioneer in DC fast charging since its first system was delivered 13 years ago, and has since sold over 840,000 EV chargers in over 85 countries. The facility in South Carolina will also produce the Terra DC wallbox, which is rated up to 24 kW. The range of chargers produced at the facility will cater to a variety of charging site needs, including highway charging, commercial buildings, auto dealerships, and more.
Since 2010, ABB has invested $14 billion in the US and has grown to become its largest market with over 20,000 employees in over 40 manufacturing and distribution facilities. ABB is a technology leader in electrification and automation and is dedicated to driving innovation and industrial transformation through its solutions that connect engineering know-how and software. The company is committed to creating a more sustainable and resource-efficient future, building on its 130 years of excellence and its 105,000 employees.
