Denbighshire County Council is leading the charge in sustainable energy by installing cutting-edge vehicle-to-grid (V2G) electric vehicle (EV) chargers at its fleet depot. Unlike traditional DC chargers, these innovative AC-based units, part of the V2VNY project, promise a cost-effective and efficient solution for workplace charging. This advancement could lower energy expenses for EV users and bolster the UK’s electricity grid resilience, marking a pivotal step toward a greener future.

Key Highlights:

  • Denbighshire County Council pioneers AC V2G chargers.
  • V2VNY project tests affordable AC technology.
  • V2G reduces costs and strengthens grid stability.
  • Led by Hangar19 with CrowdCharge, DriveElectric support.
  • Depot hosts over 100 EVs, solar-powered energy.

The V2VNY initiative, short for Vehicle 2 Volume eNergy Yield, is exploring next-generation V2G chargers that leverage AC (alternating current) technology. AC chargers stand out for their affordability and efficiency at lower power levels, making them ideal for workplace and home use compared to DC (direct current) alternatives. At Denbighshire’s Fleet Services Centre, which manages over 400 vehicles—including more than 100 EVs—these chargers enable the council to charge its fleet and return surplus energy to the grid, enhancing energy independence.

Hangar19, a UK leader in EV charging solutions, spearheads the project, introducing the market’s first multi-socket AC bi-directional charger. Partners like CrowdCharge, utilizing AI to optimize charging, and DriveElectric bolster the trial’s success. The depot’s solar panels and battery storage further amplify sustainability, creating a smart energy ecosystem.

Martin Griffiths, Denbighshire’s Fleet Mobility Lead Officer, noted, “Vehicle-to-grid charging, paired with EVs and solar power, reduces grid dependency, boosts resilience, and cuts costs while lowering emissions.” Councillor Barry Mellor, Environment and Transport Lead, added, “This innovative system aligns with our 2019 climate emergency goals, significantly reducing our fleet’s carbon footprint.”

With over 1.4 million EVs in the UK, V2G technology could transform these vehicles into mobile energy hubs, storing renewable energy and easing peak grid demand. This shift supports the UK’s net zero ambitions, offering both environmental and financial benefits.
