Advantech, a recognized global leader in AIoT and Edge Computing, has officially launched the AFE-E420, a new single-board computer (SBC). As part of a new application-focused product series, this board delivers a consolidated and revolutionary solution specifically for EV charger and energy storage applications. Partnering with NXP® Semiconductors and Arm, the AFE-E420 provides exceptional reliability, security, and scalable performance while maintaining minimal power usage, making it an ideal and economical choice for field applications.

Key Highlights

  • Advanced Processing: The AFE-E420 is powered by the latest NXP i.MX 93 applications processor, which includes an upgraded Arm® Cortex®-A55 core for better performance and a Cortex-M33 co-processor for real-time tasks.
  • Machine Learning Integration: It is the first in the i.MX family to feature the Arm Ethos-U65 microNPU, which enables the creation of more advanced and efficient machine learning applications at the edge.
  • Simplified, Compact Design: The board is designed to simplify EV charger design, manufacture, and maintenance by integrating both EVSE and SECC functions into a compact 145 x 115mm unit.
  • Universal Charging Compatibility: It offers broad compliance with major charging standards, including CCS1, CCS2, NACS, GB/T, and CHAdeMO, and supports key protocols like ISO15118 and OCPP.
  • Enhanced Security: The board features the advanced EdgeLock® secure enclave, which helps elevate the level of security in widely adopted charging scenarios.

High-Performance Processing and Security

The core of the Advantech AFE-E420 is the cutting-edge NXP i.MX 93 applications processor. This advanced chip enhances performance and reduces power consumption with its Arm® Cortex®-A55 core. An independent Cortex-M33 co-processor is also integrated to seamlessly handle real-time domain tasks, such as monitoring the critical control pilot communications between an EV and the charger.

A key innovation is the inclusion of the Arm Ethos-U65 microNPU, marking a first for the i.MX processor family. This feature empowers developers to create more sophisticated machine learning applications with notable cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency. To address modern security demands, the AFE-E420 is equipped with the EdgeLock® secure enclave for enhanced protection. “The highly integrated i.MX 93 applications processors combine the capabilities of the Arm Ethos-U65 microNPU with advanced security…to deliver efficient, fast, secure machine learning at the edge,” stated Alexandra Dopplinger, Director of Product Marketing at NXP.

Integrated Design and Versatile Connectivity

Advantech has engineered the AFE-E420 to integrate both the Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) and the Supply Equipment Communication Controller (SECC). This consolidation into a single, small-footprint board simplifies the entire process of EV charger design, production, and maintenance.

Despite its compact 145 x 115mm dimensions, the AFE-E420 offers extensive connectivity. It features dual display support, four CAN-FD ports, six selectable RS-232/422/485 ports, six RTD channels, and two control pilot ports. This rich set of interfaces makes it a robust solution for complex energy applications.

Commitment to Global Standards

The AFE-E420 is built for global deployment with multiple, independent CAN-FD and Powerline Communication (PLC) interfaces. This ensures compliance with a comprehensive range of charging standards, including CCS1, CCS2, NACS, GB/T, and CHAdeMO. Advantech collaborates with software partners to enable essential communication protocols like ISO15118 and OCPP, which eases the deployment and maintenance of end devices. Furthermore, as a member of CharIN—the association managing standards for CCS, V2G, and more—Advantech ensures its solutions consistently meet the latest industry requirements and drive the market toward a more sustainable future.
