The Audi A6 e-tron has earned the highest possible five-star overall rating in the U.S. New Car Assessment Program, the crash-test evaluation run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with a side-impact injury risk of just 2.0 percent. The result places the A6 e-tron among the safest vehicles NHTSA has tested since adopting its current, more stringent U.S. NCAP methodology in 2012. The rating follows a five-star finish in the 2025 Euro NCAP test and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award earned in April 2026, giving the model top marks across three of the industry’s most closely watched consumer safety programs.
Highlights
- Five-star overall U.S. NCAP rating, with a 2.0% side-impact injury risk, 8.1% frontal-impact injury risk, and 6.9% rollover risk
- IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award earned in April 2026
- Five-star Euro NCAP rating carried over from 2025
- Result places the A6 e-tron among the safest vehicles NHTSA has tested since its 2012 U.S. NCAP methodology overhaul
How NHTSA Scored the A6 e-tron
U.S. NCAP evaluates vehicles across three standardized crash scenarios: frontal impact, side impact, and rollover risk. The A6 e-tron posted an 8.1 percent frontal-impact injury risk and a 6.9 percent rollover risk alongside its 2.0 percent side-impact figure. NHTSA reserves its five-star rating for vehicles whose injury risk falls significantly below the agency’s defined thresholds, and side-impact collisions in particular carry some of the highest injury risk of any crash type.
A Second Accolade From IIHS
The A6 e-tron also secured a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in April 2026, the organization’s highest designation. IIHS bases the award on more than raw crash performance, factoring in driver-assistance technology, pedestrian protection, and headlight performance. The insurance-industry-funded organization is regarded by many customers as an important quality seal when comparing vehicles.
Euro NCAP Tests Different Ground
The A6 e-tron’s five-star Euro NCAP rating dates to 2025. Euro NCAP’s methodology diverges from U.S. NCAP in what it measures: alongside crash performance, it evaluates driver-assistance systems and protection for vulnerable road users, including children. Audi’s related Q6 e-tron illustrates the weight of that criterion — it scored 92 percent for child occupant protection, earning “Best in Class” status among vehicles tested in 2023 and 2024.
Part of a Wider Five-Star Pattern
The A6 e-tron joins a lineup of recent Audi models posting five-star NCAP results, including the A3, Q3, Q4 e-tron, A5, Q5, Q6 e-tron, and Q8.
What Comes Next
Audi says results from consumer safety programs, together with its own real-world and virtual crash testing, feed directly into ongoing model development. Current PPE- and PPC-based models are gaining an enhanced Adaptive Driving Assistant with highway lane-change assistance, predictive speed adaptation, and connected road-surface monitoring, along with additional parking and maneuvering assistance features.
