The Audi charging hub has recently launched in Tokyo, Japan, marking its first expansion outside Europe. Located in the bustling Kioichō business district, this facility offers four fast-charging points, each delivering up to 150 kilowatts (kW) of power. This feature sets a new standard in the Japanese charging infrastructure by supporting a rapid charging capacity for electric vehicles (EVs) from various manufacturers.
Key Highlights:
- Location and Accessibility: Situated in Kioichō, near Audi City Kioichō showroom.
- Charging Capacity: Up to 150 kW at each of the four fast-charging points.
- Universal Access: Compatible with all brands of electric vehicles.
- Sustainable Energy: Exclusively uses renewable energy sources.
The hub is designed to cater primarily to urban dwellers who do not have personal charging options at home. Each station is equipped with CHAdeMO charging plugs, a standard fast-charging method in Japan. The proximity to offices, shopping centers, and cafés enhances the charging experience, allowing users to utilize their time effectively while their vehicles charge.
Audi’s strategy involves a buffer storage system that lessens the impact on the local power grid and utilizes energy primarily from renewable sources, including a significant contribution from onsite photovoltaic panels. This system enables the hub to function efficiently despite Japan’s typically lower grid voltage of 100 volts.
In promoting this new charging hub, Audi underscores its commitment to enhancing the charging infrastructure within Japan. “A key success factor for the mobility transition is the charging infrastructure, which we are supplementing sensibly with our Audi charging hubs,” stated Ralph Hollmig, Senior Director of Premium Charging at AUDI AG. Matthias Schepers, Audi Japan Brand Director, expressed enthusiasm about the launch: “I am delighted that we are launching the Audi charging hub in Japan. The fast-charging points are one of the cornerstones of our global electrification strategy.”
Looking ahead, Audi plans to establish a second charging hub in the Shiba kōen district, near the iconic Tokyo Tower, underscoring the expansion of this initiative within the city. Audi has already established similar hubs across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, demonstrating a consistent and effective approach to supporting the electric vehicle market. This expansion is a strategic part of Audi’s global electrification efforts, reflecting its dedication to sustainable mobility solutions.
