Autel Europe, in partnership with Icelandic energy provider ON Power, has successfully launched Europe’s first commercial MaxiCharger Megawatt Charging System (MCS). This significant deployment represents a major advancement in the infrastructure required to support the large-scale electrification of heavy-duty transportation across the continent.
The new charging system is now operational in Borgarnes, Iceland, a strategic location on the nation’s primary Ring Road. The installation is poised to serve the growing number of electric trucks and commercial vehicles navigating this critical logistics corridor. This initiative not only enhances Iceland’s sustainable transport capabilities but also establishes a new benchmark for high-power charging infrastructure throughout Europe.
Key Highlights
- First in Europe: This is the first commercial deployment of Autel’s MaxiCharger Megawatt Charging System in Europe.
- High-Power Capacity: The system currently delivers 640 kW of DC charging power and is engineered to be scaled up to 1.2 MW and 1,500 A.
- Strategic Location: Installed in Borgarnes, Iceland, on a key logistics route to support heavy-duty electric vehicles.
- Future-Proof Design: The modular architecture is designed to meet the increasing power demands of future electric trucks and buses.
- Durable Engineering: The system is built to operate reliably in Iceland’s extreme weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures and high winds.
Advancing Heavy-Duty Electrification
The launch of the MaxiCharger MCS is a pivotal step in decarbonizing the European transport sector. As new EU regulations push for reduced emissions from heavy-duty vehicles, the demand for powerful and reliable charging solutions is rapidly increasing. This project showcases a scalable and resilient infrastructure model prepared for the future of zero-emission logistics.
“This project represents a major step forward in Autel’s expansion into the European heavy-duty charging market,” stated Andreas Lastei, VP of Sales & Marketing at Autel Europe. “We are proud to partner with ON Power to deliver one of the most advanced and resilient MCS systems in Europe.”
Engineered for Performance and Compliance
The MaxiCharger MCS platform is designed for durability, ensuring consistent performance in the demanding Nordic climate. Its robust construction guarantees reliability in challenging environmental conditions, making it a suitable solution for regions with harsh weather. The system adheres to international standards, including IEC 61851 and ISO 15118, ensuring interoperability and readiness for Europe’s evolving high-power charging landscape.
This deployment follows Autel Europe’s recent successful collaborations, including co-hosting the first MCS controller test event with CharIN and completing a vehicle-based megawatt charging test. These initiatives have validated the system’s performance and confirmed its readiness for widespread commercial use.
A Partnership for a Sustainable Future
The collaboration between Autel Europe and ON Power highlights a shared commitment to advancing sustainable energy and transportation. ON Power has been a leader in Iceland’s energy transition, consistently investing in infrastructure that supports emerging clean technologies.
“Our goal is to lead the energy transition and build infrastructure that supports emerging technologies,” said Jóhann Ingi Magnússon, Head of Sales and Customer Service at ON Power. “This initiative marks an important step in the development of the energy transition and demonstrates ON Power’s commitment to taking the lead, not only locally, but internationally as well.”
As the European transport sector continues its shift towards electrification, the successful launch of the MaxiCharger MCS in Iceland sets a powerful precedent for the development of future-proof, high-capacity charging networks essential for a zero-emission future.
