The BMW Group is significantly expanding its global production network for the next generation of high-voltage batteries to support the upcoming Neue Klasse fully electric vehicles. Five new facilities on three continents will produce these batteries, emphasizing a “local for local” strategy to enhance resilience and reduce the carbon footprint of production.
Key Highlights:
- Five new battery production facilities are being established in Lower Bavaria (Germany), Debrecen (Hungary), Woodruff (USA), Shenyang (China), and San Luis Potosí (Mexico).
- Integration of battery and vehicle production to minimize transportation distance and carbon emissions.
- Launch of the Neue Klasse vehicles in Debrecen by 2025, with subsequent production starting in China by 2026 and Mexico by 2027.
- Upgrading of existing sites to secure and create jobs, and to enhance production capabilities.
- Prototype battery cells being developed at the Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf and the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich.
Battery and Vehicle Production Integration
The BMW Group’s strategy involves close integration of battery and vehicle production to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Neue Klasse vehicles will feature all-new cylindrical cells, offering improved energy density, faster charging times, and extended range. Assembly plants for these sixth-generation batteries are being built near vehicle production sites in line with the “local for local” approach. This ensures continuity in production despite political or economic disruptions and reduces the carbon footprint.
Neue Klasse Production Timeline
The first Neue Klasse vehicles will be manufactured at the new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, starting in 2025. Battery and vehicle production will commence simultaneously, with extensive preparations ensuring a smooth launch. By 2026, production will expand to China, with the BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) plant in Shenyang. In Mexico, the San Luis Potosí plant will begin production in 2027, significantly expanding its facilities to accommodate new production lines.
Expansion in Lower Bavaria and Woodruff
In Germany, the BMW Group will produce high-voltage batteries in a new facility in Irlbach-Strasskirchen, Lower Bavaria. This plant will supply batteries to local car plants, reinforcing the local for local principle. In the USA, the new Plant Woodruff in South Carolina will support the Spartanburg plant by assembling batteries for fully electric cars, creating over 300 new jobs.
Research and Development Focus
Prototype battery cells for the Neue Klasse are currently produced at the Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf. This complements the development work at the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich, ensuring seamless integration from prototype to series production.
Bottom Line
The BMW Group’s extensive investment in global battery production facilities underscores its commitment to sustainable and efficient production. By localizing production and integrating advanced technology, the BMW Group aims to lead the transition to fully electric driving with the Neue Klasse, setting new standards in the automotive industry.
