BorgWarner has unveiled its latest innovation in automotive technology, supplying Polestar BEV SUVs with state-of-the-art electric Torque Vectoring and Disconnect (eTVD) systems. This pioneering technology is designed to enhance vehicle dynamics, ensuring improved safety and efficiency under various driving conditions.

Key Highlights

  • First-to-Market Technology: BorgWarner introduces its eTVD systems, enhancing the dynamic performance and efficiency of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
  • Enhanced Vehicle Safety: The eTVD system adaptively improves safety, offering better control in diverse road and weather conditions.
  • Innovative Design and Software: Features include a 3-in-1 system that replaces traditional differentials and provides both torque vectoring and a disconnect function, minimizing brake wear and reducing emissions.
  • Broad OEM Adaptability: BorgWarner’s systems can be customized to meet specific OEM needs and branding characteristics.
  • Increased Dynamic Performance: The system prevents unnecessary brake intervention, enhancing the driving experience by reducing vibrations and improving traction.

The eTVD system, currently in production on the Polestar 3 SUV, represents a significant step forward in BorgWarner’s portfolio. This system is part of their broader electric torque management system (eTMS), which smartly controls wheel torque to heighten stability, optimize dynamic performance, and improve traction during both launch and acceleration. Plans are in place to extend production to another major European OEM later this year.

Volker Weng, Vice President of BorgWarner Inc. and President and General Manager of BorgWarner Drivetrain and Battery Systems, highlighted the system’s impact: “Our new electric vehicle torque management systems showcase our multidisciplinary expertise, system integration capabilities, and the exceptional work of our BorgWarner team,” said Weng. He also noted the importance of advanced software systems in today’s market, emphasizing that the eTVD can “precisely and quickly calculate, predict and control vehicle behavior across a wide range of situations.” Feedback from customer test drives has been overwhelmingly positive.

The eTVD’s high-level software and controls are adaptable, allowing customization by OEMs to align with their platform needs and brand characteristics. This adaptability is crucial in addressing the increased weight of BEVs, which typically reduces vehicle agility. BorgWarner’s innovative solutions provide a much lighter feel to the vehicle while enhancing safety and performance.

For over 130 years, BorgWarner has led global product innovation focused on building a cleaner, healthier, and safer future through sustainable mobility solutions.
