Supporting Sustainable Connectivity
BT Group manages the second-largest commercial vehicle fleet in the UK, with over 27,000 vehicles serving broadband and mobile network operations. Currently, engineers maintain 19,500 mobile masts for the EE network, 5,600 telephone exchanges, and the largest full-fiber broadband network, which spans over 16 million premises. With these EVs, engineers will work more efficiently while minimizing the company’s carbon footprint.
Simon Lowth, Chief Financial Officer of BT Group, emphasized the importance of sustainability:
“By integrating yet more electric vehicles into our operations, we are taking another significant step towards reducing our carbon footprint and supporting the UK’s transition to a greener future.”
Government Support for EV Transition
Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, praised the initiative, highlighting the role of the government’s plug-in van grant. She stated:
“Businesses have a crucial role to play in driving the transition to electric cars and vans. That’s why it’s fantastic to see that BT Group have made the most of our plug-in van grant to order 3,500 brand new EVs.”
Climate Leadership
BT Group has led climate action for over three decades, achieving a 61% reduction in carbon emissions intensity since FY17. The company continues to transition from legacy systems to energy-efficient full-fiber, 4G, and 5G networks, reinforcing its environmental commitments.
