ChargePoint, Onvo Add Highway Fast Chargers in Northeast

ChargePoint and Onvo will add ultra-fast EV charging to twelve travel plazas across Pennsylvania and New York, targeting highway corridors in the northeastern U.S. with amenity-adjacent Express Plus stations.

ChargePoint and Onvo plan to install ultra-fast EV charging stations at twelve Onvo travel plazas across Pennsylvania and New York, targeting major highway corridors in the northeastern United States. ChargePoint (NYSE: CHPT), a networked electric vehicle charging provider, is pairing its Express Plus fast chargers with Onvo, a family-owned travel plaza brand headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Onvo operates travel plazas and convenience stores across Pennsylvania and upstate New York, and the companies say the new chargers will sit alongside food, retail, and other driver amenities at highway-adjacent sites. The initial rollout is designed to close gaps in fast-charging availability for drivers on longer trips, according to the companies.

Highlights

  • Twelve Onvo travel plazas across Pennsylvania and New York are slated for the initial ChargePoint-Onvo rollout.
  • Each site will feature ChargePoint Express Plus fast chargers positioned near highway amenities such as food and retail.
  • Onvo operates 42 travel plazas and convenience stores across Pennsylvania and upstate New York.
  • ChargePoint Express Plus is designed to charge multiple vehicles simultaneously from a single system.

Deal Targets Highway Charging Gaps

The rollout will place ChargePoint Express Plus stations at Onvo sites strategically located near major highways, with the goal of serving drivers during longer trips and helping close gaps in available fast-charging infrastructure. The companies say the stations will be sited at Onvo locations offering food, retail, and other conveniences, so charging time overlaps with a stop drivers are already likely to make.

What Express Plus Delivers

ChargePoint says Express Plus enables simultaneous charging of multiple vehicles from a single system and is engineered to deliver sustained high-power output, allowing drivers to charge efficiently. The company says each station is designed to support any EV currently on the road. ChargePoint, which also recently expanded a similarly structured highway fast-charging partnership in the southeastern U.S., says it connects drivers to more than 1.37 million public and private charging ports worldwide.

Executives on the Partnership

“ChargePoint’s collaboration with Onvo highlights our commitment to ultra-fast charging infrastructure at locations that offer driver amenities,” said Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint. “By enabling fast, reliable charging at highway rest stops, we are making long-distance EV travel seamless and accessible.”

“Partnering with ChargePoint allows us to best serve all drivers needing to charge their vehicles along our nation’s highways,” said Harman Aulakh, Vice President, Marketing at Onvo. “As more drivers make the switch to electric vehicles, we are proud to offer convenient, high-performance charging at Onvo locations across our footprint.”

Onvo’s Highway Footprint

Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Onvo operates 42 travel plazas and convenience stores across Pennsylvania and upstate New York, a footprint that overlaps with the highway-corridor travel plazas other networks have targeted for highway-adjacent charging deployments. Guests at Onvo locations earn rewards, called Hoots, through the company’s Onvo Rewards program.
