ChargePoint, a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, has introduced a groundbreaking new architecture for its AC Level 2 chargers. This cutting-edge technology aims to transform the EV charging landscape with advancements such as bidirectional charging, exceptional charging speeds, and intelligent energy management features, catering to residential, commercial, and fleet needs across North America and Europe.
Key Highlights:
- Bidirectional Charging: Enables EVs to return energy to homes, buildings, or the power grid.
- Ultra-Fast Charging: Delivers up to 19.2 kW in North America and 22 kW in Europe, fully charging a typical EV battery in about four hours.
- Dynamic Load Balancing: Adjusts charging speed based on building power demands for efficient energy use.
- Smart Home Integration: Works with solar charging, home batteries, and energy management systems.
- Series-Wiring Capability: Allows multiple chargers to share power, minimizing the need for costly upgrades.
- Omni Port Technology: Supports charging of various North American EV models from one station.
The standout feature of this new architecture is bidirectional charging, which lets EVs serve as energy sources, sending power back to homes, businesses, or the grid. This innovation positions EVs as mobile energy storage units, potentially lowering costs and enhancing grid reliability.
Charging speed is another major upgrade, with 19.2 kW in North America and 22 kW in Europe, cutting charge times to approximately four hours for a full battery—twice as fast as many existing AC Level 2 chargers. Meanwhile, dynamic load balancing ensures power is distributed smartly, preventing overloads by adapting to real-time building energy needs.
Designed for modern homes, the chargers integrate with solar charging and smart energy systems, helping users leverage renewable energy efficiently. For multi-EV settings like fleet depots or apartment complexes, series-wiring capability simplifies installation by enabling power sharing without major electrical upgrades.
In North America, the Omni Port feature enhances versatility, allowing a single station to charge EVs with different connector types. As a market leader with an estimated 61% share of U.S. public AC Level 2 chargers, ChargePoint ensures compliance with regulations like ENERGY STAR® in the U.S. and MID/Eichrecht in Europe.
The rollout begins in Europe this summer, with North America following by the end of 2025.
