General Motors has solidified its position as the second-largest seller of electric vehicles in the United States, a success driven largely by the significant growth of its Chevrolet brand. Propelled by a diverse portfolio of electric offerings, Chevrolet has surpassed Ford to become one of the top domestic EV brand in sales for the year.
Key Highlights
- General Motors is now the #2 seller of EVs in the U.S., with more than 62,000 electric vehicles sold year-to-date through May.
- In the first quarter of 2025, Chevrolet emerged as the fastest-growing domestic EV brand, outselling Ford.
- GM’s share of the U.S. EV market reached approximately 15.5% in the first two months of the second quarter, more than doubling its position from the previous year.
- Through key partnerships, GM drivers now have access to a network of more than 250,000 public chargers across North America.
Record Sales and Market Dominance
The first five months of the year have marked a period of substantial growth for GM’s electric vehicle division. Through May, Chevrolet sold over 37,000 EVs in the United States, compared to Ford’s 34,000. This milestone follows a remarkable 94% year-over-year growth in the first quarter, with May ranking as GM’s second-best month in history for EV sales.
The company’s U.S. EV market share is now approaching its national market share of 17% for all vehicles.
“Customers are responding in record numbers to our world-class portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles,” said Rory Harvey, executive VP and president of global markets. “In the first two months of the second quarter, we more than doubled our EV sales compared to the same period last year.”
A Diverse EV Portfolio
A key factor in this success is GM’s broad portfolio of 13 electric vehicles across its Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC brands. This diverse lineup is designed to meet a wide range of consumer needs and preferences.
Offerings include capable full-size trucks like the Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV, the groundbreaking GMC HUMMER EV, the luxury Cadillac Escalade IQ SUV, and the budget-friendly Chevrolet Equinox EV. This strategic variety ensures that there is an electric option for nearly every type of driver.
Expanding Charging Accessibility
To support its growing fleet of EVs, GM has made significant investments in charging infrastructure. The company is part of Ionna, a joint venture with seven other automakers that aims to install 30,000 charging bays across the U.S. by 2030.
Additionally, a collaboration between GM, Pilot Company, and EVgo Inc. has established fast-charging infrastructure at more than 130 locations across over 25 states, further enhancing charging accessibility for GM drivers.
