Volkswagen has unveiled the ID. Polo GTI, the first all-electric model in the 50-year history of the GTI badge, with 166 kW (226 PS), a 6.8-second 0–100 km/h sprint, and a starting price in Germany of just under €39,000 (about $45,630). The compact sports car made its world premiere at the Nürburgring 24-hour race, with German pre-sales scheduled to open this autumn. Volkswagen confirmed the model in last year’s naming strategy update and has now revealed the production-specification car alongside full technical details on the Volkswagen newsroom.
Highlights
- 226 PS, 290 Nm: The front-wheel-drive APP290 drive system delivers power to the wheels via an electronically controlled front differential lock as standard, with a 6.8-second 0–100 km/h time and 175 km/h top speed.
- 52 kWh NMC battery: Provisional WLTP range of up to 424 km, with DC charging at up to 105 kW and a 10–80 percent charge in about 24 minutes.
- Standard chassis kit: Adaptive DCC sports suspension, progressive steering, 19-inch alloy wheels, IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights, and premium sports seats are fitted as standard.
- Pricing: Just under €39,000 (about $45,630) in Germany; UK pricing and specification are still to be confirmed.

Front-wheel drive and a GTI driving profile
The ID. Polo GTI is the production version of the ID. GTI Concept and follows the series ID. Polo unveiled last month. Volkswagen has retained front-wheel drive for the performance variant — a direct callback to the 1976 Golf GTI — and routes the APP290 motor’s 290 Nm through an electronically controlled front differential lock fitted as standard. The company reports the full 226 PS and 290 Nm are available at all times, and that the differential lock proportions the power to maintain cornering composure.
A GTI driving profile, activated by a steering-wheel button, switches the electric motor, the standard progressive steering, and the adaptive DCC sports chassis to their most aggressive settings simultaneously. The cockpit shifts to a GTI-specific colour and graphics scheme when the profile is engaged.
Battery, charging, and range
Propulsion comes from a 52 kWh (net) nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, the same pack used in the higher-output versions of the standard ID. Polo. Volkswagen lists a provisional WLTP range of up to 424 km and DC fast-charging at up to 105 kW, with a 10 to 80 percent charge taking about 24 minutes thanks to what the company describes as a particularly constant charging curve. Provisional combined consumption is rated at 16.4–14.4 kWh/100 km. U.S. readers should note that WLTP figures generally produce higher range numbers than the EPA cycle used in North America.

Exterior and interior design
The ID. Polo GTI adopts Volkswagen’s Pure Positive design language on a body that sits on 19-inch alloys as standard. A red stripe runs almost the full width of the front, with a 3D GTI logo at the left and an LED light strip, illuminated VW badge, and IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights above. The honeycomb-pattern air intake sits below, flanked by two red-painted vertical elements styled after motorsport towing eyes. At the rear, a split roof spoiler, IQ.LIGHT tail lights with red-illuminated transparent zones, and a two-part black diffuser distinguish the GTI from the standard ID. Polo.
Inside, red and black dominate. The sports steering wheel carries red topstitching and a red 12 o’clock marker, with paddles for adjusting recuperation. The premium sports seats use a fabric pattern that reinterprets the tartan check of historic GTI models, with red GTI emblems integrated into the front head restraints. A red stripe runs the width of the dash panel.
The cockpit pairs a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit with a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. A retro display mode, activated via the steering wheel’s View button, reskins the instruments and infotainment graphics in the style of the first-generation Golf — including a cassette-tape motif for the music track display.
Packaging and practicality
Volkswagen positions the ID. Polo GTI as a daily-usable performance car. The compact drive modules free up 19 mm of additional interior length over the combustion Polo GTI on the MQB platform. Luggage capacity grows by more than 25 percent, from 351 to 441 litres, expanding to 1,240 litres with the rear seats folded (against 1,125 litres in the combustion car). A detachable tow ball supports a 75 kg drawbar load and a braked towing capacity of up to 1.2 tonnes on a 12 percent gradient.
Assist systems and options
The ID. Polo GTI runs on MEB+ with Volkswagen’s latest software generation. The next-generation Travel Assist, now called Connected Travel Assist because it uses online data, is available as optional equipment. The system can detect red traffic lights and bring the vehicle to a standstill within system limits, and supports one-pedal driving for deceleration via the accelerator alone. Volkswagen notes the driver remains responsible within all system limits.
Options include a 425-watt Harman Kardon sound system with 10 speakers, a panoramic sunroof, pneumatic massage for the 12-way electric front seats, and a 19-inch Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyre (235/40/19) developed specifically for the car.
