Electric Semi-Trailers Debut in Chile

Chile has initiated the operation of the first fully electric semi-trailers and trucks, marking a significant advancement in cargo transportation. This achievement stems from a collaboration between Randon, a leading Latin American semi-trailer manufacturer, and SQM, a prominent Chilean mining company. The delivery of these vehicles, part of the exclusive Hybrid R line equipped with innovative e-Sys auxiliary traction technology by Suspensys, signifies a major leap in the transportation of mining materials in Chile.

A notable aspect of this operation is the introduction of an electric Tank semi-trailer, specifically designed for transporting lithium brine, and a dump truck for ore transport. These models have demonstrated substantial reductions in fuel consumption and wear on components when used alongside traditional combustion engine trucks.

Electric Semi-Trailers Debut in Chile

Randon’s partnership with Chilean distributor Epysa and carrier Nazar is pivotal in this venture. Nazar will manage the operation of these all-electric sets in mining areas. SQM, a leading global lithium producer with the smallest carbon footprint, acquired these electric units as part of its Sustainability Plan, aiming for carbon neutrality across all business lines by 2040, with its lithium operations targeted for 2030.

The deployment of these electric semi-trailers by Randon is a significant stride towards sustainable transportation, as they represent some of the first 100% electric cargo transport sets worldwide. The use of Hybrid R models is anticipated to substantially lower operating costs for customers.

Randoncorp’s CEO, Sérgio L. Carvalho, expressed pride in leading this transformation in logistics and transportation, emphasizing the potential of sustainable technology to revolutionize the sector. The Hybrid R line, featuring the unique e-Sys electric auxiliary traction system, is an example of Randoncorp’s commitment to innovation. This system harnesses energy generated during descent and braking, providing up to 207 hp of additional power for improved traction.
