At IAA 2024, ZF introduces its electrified trailer concept under the brand name TrailTrax, marking a significant step in reducing carbon emissions in freight transport. The system can achieve up to 16% energy savings through recuperation and 40% CO2 reductions with plug-in charging. Several leading trailer manufacturers are adopting ZF’s TrailTrax technologies, showcasing the potential of electrified trailers to transform the logistics industry.

Key Highlights:

  • TrailTrax system can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 40% with plug-in charging.
  • Provides up to 16% energy savings through brake energy recuperation.
  • Major trailer manufacturers like Kässbohrer, Krone, and BPW are integrating TrailTrax technologies.
  • Kässbohrer’s electrified trailers will be field-tested from 2025 as part of the EU-funded ZEFES project.
  • ZF’s AxTrax 2 electrified axle and other components turn conventional trailers into hybrid systems.

With increasing emphasis on fuel efficiency in trucks, trailers are becoming the next frontier for reducing carbon emissions in road freight transportation. ZF’s electrified trailer system, now branded as TrailTrax, integrates advanced components such as the AxTrax 2 e-Axle, trailer EBS, and a battery system box, all designed to lower operational costs and emissions.

Key Benefits

TrailTrax’s energy-saving capabilities stem from its recuperation technology, which converts braking energy into usable power. When combined with plug-in charging, the system delivers significant CO2 reductions, offering a 40% decrease in emissions. These reductions are crucial for meeting global sustainability goals in freight transportation.

Industry Adoption

Major players in the trailer manufacturing industry, including Kässbohrer, Krone, and BPW, are adopting ZF’s TrailTrax technologies, signaling broad industry support. Kässbohrer is set to showcase its electrified curtainsider with TrailTrax integration at the IAA 2024. Krone will feature its reefer trailer, equipped with TrailTrax, capable of achieving the same 40% CO2 reduction target.

Collaborative Efforts

Key industry leaders are enthusiastic about TrailTrax’s potential:

  • Kässbohrer’s Ms. İffet Turken emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration for advancing the trailer industry toward sustainability.
  • BPW’s Markus Schell highlighted the integration of ZF’s driveline expertise with BPW’s robust running gear systems, ensuring a trusted solution for electrified trailers.

By 2025, field testing of Kässbohrer’s electrified trailers is expected across Europe, funded by the EU’s ZEFES project, further advancing the shift toward zero-emissions transport.

ZF’s TrailTrax is set to play a pivotal role in electrifying trailers and achieving significant carbon emissions reductions, paving the way for a more sustainable future in freight logistics.
