Electrify America has announced the expansion of its Plug&Charge payment technology, with Nissan becoming the latest automaker to offer the feature on its upcoming electric vehicles. This integration will begin with the all-new 2026 Nissan LEAF.
Key Highlights
- Nissan is the ninth automaker to adopt Electrify America’s Plug&Charge technology.
- The technology will debut on the 2026 Nissan LEAF.
- Plug&Charge enables automatic charging and payment simply by plugging the vehicle into a compatible charger.
- The feature is available at all 5,000+ chargers on the Electrify America network.
- Customer usage of Plug&Charge has nearly doubled over the last year.
A Simplified Charging Experience
The Plug&Charge feature simplifies the public charging process by allowing drivers to initiate a session and process payment just by plugging in their vehicle. This eliminates the need to interact with charger screens, payment cards, or mobile apps at the station.
After a one-time setup through the MyNISSAN app, the vehicle communicates directly with the charging station to handle authentication and billing automatically. This creates an effortless experience for the EV driver. Further information is available on Electrify America’s Plug&Charge page; terms and conditions apply.
Growing Adoption of Plug&Charge
Since Electrify America became the first open charging network to offer Plug&Charge in 2020, its use has steadily increased as more customers and automakers embrace its convenience.
Nissan joins a growing list of automakers offering the technology on various models, including Audi, BMW, Ford, Lucid, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen. According to Electrify America, the adoption of this feature has nearly doubled in the past year alone as more EV models have enabled the capability.
Secure Technology and Network Expansion
Plug&Charge is enabled by vehicle-to-grid communication technology that uses the secure ISO 15118 protocol. This international standard ensures that all communication between the car and the charging station is encrypted and secure.
All of Electrify America’s more than 5,000 chargers are capable of using Plug&Charge. In 2024, the network delivered over 16 million charging sessions and more than 600 gigawatt-hours of energy, representing a 65% increase from the previous year. The company anticipates continued growth and is focused on expanding its network to meet the evolving needs of EV drivers.
