Electrify America Awarded for EV Innovation

Electrify America has been recognized with the Electric Innovation Scalable Catalyst Award for its use of battery storage systems, which expand Hyper-Fast EV charging access to more communities.

Electrify America has received the Electric Innovation Scalable Catalyst Award from the Electric Innovation Initiative. The award recognizes the company’s successful deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to enhance its coast-to-coast network of Hyper-Fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Key Highlights

  • Award Recognition: Awarded the Electric Innovation Scalable Catalyst Award for deploying battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • BESS Deployment: Over 170 BESS units are operational, totaling more than 65,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of storage capacity.
  • Industry Solution: BESS helps overcome limited utility capacity, enabling Hyper-Fast charging in underserved and rural areas.
  • Charitable Donation: The $10,000 prize is being donated to Edtunity Institute to support workforce development.

Expanding EV Charging with Innovative Technology

The Scalable Catalyst Award honors projects designed to accelerate the benefits of clean energy. Electrify America’s BESS initiative was highlighted for its innovative solution to a common challenge in the EV industry: limited utility capacity in high-demand or remote locations. Many areas, particularly rural and underserved communities, face barriers to hosting Hyper-Fast charging stations due to the high costs of grid upgrades or insufficient power availability.

By storing energy from the electrical grid during low-usage periods and discharging it during peak charging times, BESS makes it possible to deliver Hyper-Fast charging without overwhelming the local power grid. This technology allows Electrify America to install larger charging stations, reduce the need for costly grid upgrades, and bring essential EV infrastructure to more communities. The company’s deployment of over 170 BESS units is the largest of its kind paired with Hyper-Fast DC charging in North America.

“Battery energy storage is unlocking a new chapter for EV charging,” said Rob Barrosa, President and CEO of Electrify America. “By overcoming electrical grid constraints, we can deliver Hyper-Fast charging in more places and serve more drivers.”

A Commitment to Community and Workforce Development

As the recipient of the Scalable Catalyst Award, Electrify America received $10,000. The company is donating the full award amount to Edtunity Institute, a minority-owned and veteran-led nonprofit. The organization focuses on continuing education and workforce development for transitioning military members and underserved populations in Virginia, helping to advance vocational training in the growing electric transportation sector.
