Key Highlights
- Received the EV Charging Innovation Excellence Award at the 2025 Battery Awards.
- Recognized for the large-scale deployment of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
- BESS technology helps overcome electrical grid constraints to expand Hyper-Fast EV charging.
- The company has deployed over 170 BESS units, the largest rollout of its kind in North America.
Overcoming Grid Constraints with BESS
Electrify America earned the award for its widespread implementation of battery energy storage systems (BESS). This technology helps address electrical grid limitations, making it possible to deliver more accessible Hyper-Fast EV charging nationwide.
According to Rob Barrosa, president and CEO of Electrify America, the BESS units function like large backup batteries for charging stations. The system stores energy during periods of low demand and releases it when EV drivers need it most. This allows the company to establish Hyper-Fast charging stations in more locations, even where the local grid cannot fully support the high power demand on its own.
By deploying BESS, Electrify America can reduce the need for costly grid upgrades and build larger charging stations in more communities. The company currently has over 170 BESS units operational, which total more than 65,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of storage capacity. This represents the largest deployment of BESS technology paired with Hyper-Fast DC charging in North America.
