EVgo Accelerates NACS Deployment for 2024

EVgo Inc., one of the largest public fast-charging networks for electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States, has announced its plan to begin deploying North American Charging Standard (NACS) connectors on its network starting this year. This strategic move comes in response to significant changes in the competitive landscape and aims to increase network utilization and expand partnerships with new site hosts.

Key Highlights:

  • NACS Deployment: EVgo will introduce NACS connectors, currently being standardized as SAE J3400, on its fast-charging network.
  • Enhanced Utilization: The company saw a utilization increase from 9% in Q1 2023 to 19% in Q1 2024.
  • Expanded Partnerships: EVgo is in talks with over 100,000 potential stalls with strategic site host partners.
  • Advanced Technology: Nearly 40% of EVgo’s stalls now feature 350kW chargers with liquid-cooled cable technology.
  • Autocharge+: Both Tesla and non-Tesla NACS vehicles can use EVgo’s streamlined payment feature.

EVgo’s NACS roll-out will serve both CCS and NACS vehicles, starting in key markets with high NACS vehicle penetration. This initiative will help maximize charger utilization and support the company’s commitment to serve all EVs. Badar Khan, CEO of EVgo, highlighted the opportunities created by the evolving EV charging landscape:

“The seismic shift in the competitive landscape for EV charging has opened new opportunities to drive usage on the EVgo network and accelerate our network expansion by fostering new site host partnerships.”

EVgo’s 350kW chargers, which nearly double the percentage of their high-power chargers from the previous year, are designed to support the latest vehicle models with advanced battery technology and high peak charge rates.

Tesla and future non-Tesla NACS vehicles will benefit from EVgo’s Autocharge+, a feature that simplifies the charging process by allowing drivers to start a charge without an app, credit card, or RFID card. This feature, mirroring the Plug and Charge experience, is available for over 50 vehicle models, including all Tesla models compatible with the CCS adapter.
