A comprehensive 2025 survey of over 26,000 electric vehicle drivers in 30 countries reveals that persistent myths remain the primary barrier to broader EV market growth worldwide.
Conducted by the Global EV Alliance (GEVA), the study provides weighted global results and country-specific data to reflect actual EV fleet distribution.
Highlights
- 77% of respondents identify myths about electric vehicles as the largest obstacle to EV adoption in their country.
- 83% support new policy measures to accelerate electric vehicle sales.
- 88% of EV owners express no concern over vehicle fire risk.
- 58% cite high purchase price as a key barrier to wider EV uptake.
Key Findings on EV Myths and Perceptions
The survey underscores how misinformation impacts policy confidence and consumer decisions.
Joel Levin, GEVA chair and Plug In America director, notes that myths reduce policymaker support for EVs as solutions to climate change and air pollution.
Existing owners consistently reject common misconceptions. For example, the vast majority report no worry about battery fires, based on direct ownership experience.
Levin emphasizes that amplifying real driver voices effectively counters false narratives in public discourse.
Economic Factors Driving EV Adoption
Cost remains central to purchase decisions and market expansion.
Lower operating energy costs motivated 45% of respondents to choose an EV.
Yet 58% view the initial purchase price as a significant national barrier.
Ellen Hiep from the Dutch EV drivers’ association states that consumer incentives making EVs the cheapest option overall are essential for faster transition.
Survey Methodology and Access
GEVA, representing 70 national EV associations across 42 countries, collected responses via open online forms in September and October 2025.
Results were weighted by each country’s share of the global EV fleet to ensure representative global aggregates.
