General Motors (GM) has partnered with Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) to launch a residential Vehicle-to-Everything pilot program in Northern and Central California. This initiative allows eligible customers to use GM’s bidirectional electric vehicle (EV) charging technology to power their homes during outages and potentially support the energy grid in the future. The program offers up to $4,500 in incentives for qualifying GM Energy home products, aiming to enhance grid resiliency and showcase the broader benefits of EV ownership.

Key Highlights

  • Incentives Available: Customers can receive up to $4,500 off GM Energy products like the V2H Bundle or Home System, with additional rewards for participating in backup power events.
  • Eligible Vehicles: The program includes models like the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, 2024 Cadillac Lyriq EV, and others, with 2025 models expected to join soon.
  • Grid Support Potential: Bidirectional charging could help balance energy demand, improving overall grid resiliency and reducing EV ownership costs over time.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward integrating EVs into home energy systems. GM Energy Vice President Wade Sheffer emphasized the program’s value, stating, “For Northern California customers looking to take more control of their home energy, this program with PG&E represents a great opportunity.” Beyond powering homes during outages, the technology aims to demonstrate how EVs can contribute to a more reliable energy grid. PG&E’s Mike Delaney echoed this sentiment, noting, “PG&E is leading the way to enable vehicle-grid-integration technology creating a path for EVs to power customer homes, ultimately benefiting all Californians.”

The pilot program collects charging data to assess how bidirectional technology can benefit both customers and utilities. This information will guide efforts to scale similar initiatives across California, potentially transforming how EV owners interact with the energy ecosystem. By offering financial incentives and testing real-world applications, GM and PG&E are paving the way for a future where EVs serve as versatile energy assets.

Eligible customers can enroll through the GM Energy Enrollment Portal, accessing tools to manage home energy and support grid stability. As GM expands its EV lineup and PG&E advances its sustainability goals, this partnership highlights a practical approach to merging transportation and energy innovation. The program not only empowers customers but also sets a precedent for other utilities and automakers to explore bidirectional charging solutions.
