A Hybrid Pioneer Returns as an EV
The original Insight launched in 1999 as Honda’s first mass-production hybrid. The new fourth-generation model carries the nameplate forward as a battery-electric crossover, positioned by the automaker as a successor that retains Honda’s driving character while moving to a fully electric powertrain.
The Japan-only launch follows Honda’s March 2026 decision to cancel three North American EV models — the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX — as part of a broader reassessment of its electrification strategy. The Insight’s 3,000-unit cap reflects a more measured domestic rollout rather than a volume push, consistent with Honda’s narrower near-term EV posture.
Design, Packaging, and Cabin
The Insight adopts crossover SUV proportions with front-drive layout and five-passenger seating. The interior uses soft-padded materials and LED ambient lighting along the instrument panel and door contours. A center console without a divider between the front seats enables walk-through access.
Rear-seat occupants get reclining seatbacks and expanded legroom. Cargo space includes a two-position luggage board and a fold-down rear seatback. A Head-Up Display serves as the primary driver information source, paired with simplified instrument meters intended to reduce time looking away from the road.
Range, Charging, and Drive Dynamics
The Insight delivers 535 km (332 miles) on Japan’s WLTC (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicle Test Cycles) protocol. WLTC figures are manufacturer-reported test-cycle numbers and are not directly comparable to EPA-certified estimates; real-world range will vary with conditions. Fast charging from a charger rated above 50 kW reaches 80% in approximately 40 minutes, though Honda notes charging times extend in summer and winter.
Four drive modes — Normal, Sport, Econ, and Snow — adjust response for different conditions. Sport mode activates an Active Sound Control system that produces synthesized engine sounds during acceleration and deceleration. The vehicle also supports vehicle-to-load output of up to 1,500 W through the optional Honda Power Supply Connector, enabling use of the battery for external AC devices.
Cabin Technology and Safety Suite
An Intelligent Heating System coordinates seat, steering wheel, and cabin heating elements, and incorporates radiant heater panels that Honda says are quieter and more efficient than forced-air heating. An auto mode detects rear occupants and adjusts HVAC output accordingly. The vehicle also offers an aroma diffuser that accommodates up to three of six available fragrance cartridges, selectable through the display audio screen.
Audio comes from a 12-speaker BOSE Premium Sound System tuned specifically for the model. Ambient lighting links to door operation and HVAC temperature settings.
Honda SENSING comes standard with 15 functions, including Collision Mitigation Braking, Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Blind Spot Information, Honda Parking Pilot, and a Parking Sensor System.
Pricing, Colors, and Availability
The Insight is priced at ¥5,500,000 including 10% consumption tax, equivalent to approximately $34,640 at an exchange rate of ¥158.78 per US dollar on April 16, 2026. Pricing excludes insurance, registration, and recycling charges. Final transaction prices are set independently by Honda’s Japanese sales companies.
Five body colors are offered: Obsidian Blue Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Aqua Topaz Metallic II (a new Honda original color), Slate Gray Pearl, and Diamond Dust Pearl. Premium colors carry additional charges of up to ¥66,000. A Honda ON Limited Edition with white interior is available exclusively through Honda’s online sales channel, in Diamond Dust Pearl or Crystal Black Pearl only. The Insight joins a growing slate of Japan-market BEVs, including Toyota’s recently launched bZ4X Touring.
