Honda will introduce its Class 8 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck Concept at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo on May 20, marking the beginning of a new demonstration project aimed at the future production of hydrogen-powered products for North America. This initiative is part of Honda’s strategy to expand its hydrogen business, aiming to achieve zero environmental impact and carbon neutrality by 2050.
Key Highlights:
- Honda’s hydrogen truck concept debut: Showcasing at ACT Expo on May 20.
- Seeking collaborations: Honda is looking for business partners to bring hydrogen fuel cell solutions to North America.
- Keynote presentation: Ryan Harty, Assistant Vice President, Sustainability & Business Development at American Honda Motor Co., Inc., will speak at the Ultra Clean Heavy-Vehicle Summit on May 22.
- Display of zero-emission products: Including the Autonomous Work Vehicle prototype and the 2025 Honda CR-V e:FCEV.
Honda’s Class 8 truck concept is equipped with three new Honda fuel cell (FC) systems, produced at Fuel Cell System Manufacturing, LLC (FCSM), a joint venture with General Motors in Brownstown, Michigan. This new FC system, co-developed with GM, significantly enhances performance and durability while reducing costs by two-thirds compared to previous generations.
“Commercial vehicles, including Class 8 trucks, where fuel cells offer the best zero-emission replacement for existing diesel applications, are a key part of Honda’s broad hydrogen business strategy,” said Ryan Harty. “Honda is actively seeking business collaborations and customers to help bring these hydrogen fuel cell solutions to market here in North America.”
Honda has identified four main domains for the initial application of its new fuel cell system: fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), commercial fuel cell vehicles, stationary power stations, and construction machinery.
Honda’s Display at ACT Expo
At the ACT Expo, Honda’s booth (#1031) will feature:
- Class 8 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck Concept: Making its global debut.
- 2025 Honda CR-V e:FCEV: The first production plug-in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle in America.
- Honda Fuel Cell System: Central to Honda’s hydrogen strategy, aimed at societal decarbonization.
- Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV): A prototype all-electric off-road vehicle designed to enhance worksite efficiencies.
Honda’s Environmental Commitment
Honda is dedicated to achieving zero environmental impact by 2050 through its “Triple Action to Zero” approach, which includes:
- Carbon neutrality: For all products and corporate activities.
- 100% renewable energy: Utilization across operations.
- Resource circulation: Reprocessing products into raw materials for new products.
To mitigate the environmental impact of its operations, Honda offsets CO2 emissions from its North American manufacturing through long-term virtual power purchase agreements (VPPAs) for renewable wind and solar power, covering over 60% of its electricity use in North America. Honda also encourages environmentally responsible practices among its suppliers and retail dealers across the continent.
