Hyundai Motor Group is accelerating the worldwide implementation of its advanced Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) services. This initiative enables electric vehicles (EVs) to store, supply, and share electricity with residential units and power grids. The expansion includes Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) projects in Korea and Europe, alongside Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in the United States.
Highlights
- Korea Pilot: Launching the nation’s first V2G pilot on Jeju Island by late 2025.
- European Expansion: Introducing commercial V2G services in the Netherlands to support grid flexibility.
- U.S. Resilience: Expanding V2H capabilities to function as emergency backup power sources.
V2G Pilot Implementation in Korea
The Group will launch a V2G pilot service in Jeju Island by the end of 2025, utilizing the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9. This project leverages EVs as flexible grid resources to address the region’s renewable energy oversupply issues.
This public-private collaboration involves several key stakeholders:
- Hyundai Motor Group: Oversees technology verification and general operations.
- Jeju Special Self-Governing Province: Provides necessary regulatory and policy support.
- Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO): Facilitates grid integration.
- Hyundai Engineering: Analyzes charging station operations.
Participants in the pilot can charge vehicles when energy prices are low and discharge electricity during price increases. Following this phase, the Group intends to expand V2G services nationwide.
Commercial V2G Deployment in Europe
In the Netherlands, the Group is advancing from Smart Charging (V1G) to a fully commercialized V2G service. Customer recruitment is scheduled to begin at the end of 2025.
The service utilizes bidirectional charging technology compatible with Hyundai and Kia vehicles. Initially, availability is limited to the Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9, with plans to cover additional models.
Subscribers to specific utility plans can utilize automated scheduling to optimize charging during low-rate periods. This system helps stabilize the grid in a market characterized by high electricity prices and variable power systems.
V2H Services in the United States
The Group is broadening its Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) offerings in the U.S. market to provide energy solutions during natural disasters and peak-demand periods. These systems allow EVs to serve as reliable emergency power sources.
Kia launched V2H services for the EV9 in February 2025. Future expansions include:
- Hyundai: Introducing V2H functionality with the IONIQ 9.
- Kia: Extending the service to the EV6 model.
Owners can store electricity during off-peak hours and discharge it back to the home when demand peaks, potentially reducing utility costs.
Strategic Integration
These initiatives aim to redefine the role of EVs as essential components of the global energy ecosystem. By connecting vehicles, energy systems, and society, the Group is promoting efficient, renewable-based energy use across major markets.
Hokeun Chung, Executive Vice President of Future Strategy Division, stated that these services are expected to strengthen EV competitiveness. The Group plans to expand these energy solutions to other European countries and global markets following successful implementation.
