IKEA Austria Debuts Hydrogen Trucks

IKEA Austria, in collaboration with Quantron AG, has become the pioneering IKEA market globally to roll out hydrogen fuel cell trucks. The QUANTRON QLI FCEV model trucks, boasting zero emissions, are sourced from Quantron AG, renowned for sustainable passenger and freight transport. These vehicles will be powered by green hydrogen, courtesy of energy supplier Wien Energie.

Why It Matters

The introduction of these hydrogen trucks in Austria represents a significant leap in the promotion of eco-friendly processes. Alpaslan Deliloglu, IKEA Austria’s CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer, comments: “In Austria, as the foremost IKEA market, we’re paving the way for environmentally-sound practices. Our aim, as pioneers in sustainable logistics, is to exemplify that transitioning to zero-emission deliveries is feasible today.”

Key Points

  • Quantron AG and Ballard Power Systems, the latter being a prominent leader in fuel cell technology from Canada, co-developed the fuel cell vehicles.
  • From initial feasibility studies to actual delivery, the entire project spanned just 18 months.
  • The Quantron Inside technology encompasses features like an e-axle, a high-performance battery, fuel cell, tank system, and energy management, ensuring maximum efficiency. A single fuel tank can cover up to 400 km, permitting over 500 km daily distances.
  • Andreas Haller, Quantron AG’s founder and Executive Chairman, said: “Our collaboration with IKEA has now advanced to the next level with the inception of this innovative QUANTRON product line.”

Bottom Line

The incorporation of battery-electric QUANTRON vehicles in IKEA Austria’s fleet has already resulted in an annual CO2 reduction of 450 tons. These FCEV trucks, designed for longer range deliveries, even beyond urban territories, are predicted to cut down CO2 emissions by an additional 160 tons annually. By 2025, IKEA Austria’s vision is for all its last-mile deliveries to be emission-free and to enhance its hydrogen truck fleet to 40 units.
