The Port of Long Beach is set to enhance its electric cargo handling operations with the installation of hands-free wireless chargers from InductEV. This initiative is part of a $3.3 million grant awarded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) to International Transportation Service, LLC (ITS), aimed at demonstrating innovative charging solutions for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles (MD/HD EVs).
Key Highlights:
- ITS received $3.3 million in CEC funding to deploy cutting-edge charging technology.
- InductEV’s high-power wireless inductive chargers will be installed at the port to power five battery-electric cargo handling vehicles.
- This marks InductEV’s first installation at a West Coast port, following a previous deployment at APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, NJ.
- The project is part of a larger $33 million initiative supporting five clean transportation projects in California.
- Wireless charging eliminates the need for overnight wired sessions, offering safer, more efficient energy use for fleet operators.
- InductEV’s system delivers up to 450 kW of power via inductive charging pads embedded in the ground.
John F. Rizzo, President and CEO of InductEV, emphasized the importance of wireless charging in electrifying freight and port terminals:
“We are proud to partner with the ITS team at the Port of Long Beach to help them realize their vision for a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution to power their fleet.”
Kim Holtermand, CEO of ITS, reinforced the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, stating:
“The embrace of these innovative charging technologies reinforces that commitment.”
This initiative is part of the CEC’s Clean Transportation Program, which aims to accelerate the commercial deployment of MD/HD EVs through cutting-edge charging technologies.
Revolutionizing Cargo Fleet Charging
InductEV’s wireless inductive charging system works via in-ground pads that automatically activate when paired with an under-vehicle pad. The technology eliminates real estate constraints, enhances driver safety, and reduces charging downtime by enabling multiple quick sessions throughout the day.
