IONNA, the joint venture charging network backed by eight automakers, announced plans to invest more than $250 million in California’s EV charging infrastructure over the next three years. The announcement follows kickoff ceremonies at five metropolitan locations across the state this week.
Highlights
- IONNA has contracted more than 1,000 charging bays across California as part of a planned $250 million investment through 2028
- The network has 1,100+ bays live or under construction nationwide, with 4,000 total bays contracted across the U.S.
- Plug & Charge integration now includes seven manufacturers: BMW, GM, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Rivian, and Ford

California Network Deployment
IONNA held kickoff ceremonies this week in San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose, and Westminster, representing a portion of the more than 1,000 bays now contracted across California. The Westminster location serves as the company’s first Rechargery Beacon flagship station.
The company’s California expansion shifts focus from contracting locations to activating charging infrastructure. Seth Cutler, CEO of IONNA, stated the organization is transitioning from building to operating mode with over 1,100 bays currently in construction or operational status nationwide.
Infrastructure Investment Strategy
The $250 million California investment represents IONNA’s largest state-level commitment to date. The deployment brings the network’s total contracted footprint to approximately 4,000 bays across the United States.
IONNA is launching a California EV Education program alongside station openings. The initiative includes partnerships with local dealerships and EV advocacy groups to host on-site events at Rechargery locations.

Plug & Charge Integration Expansion
IONNA has integrated Plug & Charge functionality with seven automotive manufacturers. Five of the network’s eight founding automakers have completed integration:
- BMW
- General Motors
- Hyundai
- Kia
- Mercedes-Benz
Three additional founding members—Honda, Stellantis, and Toyota—have planned integration completion by the end of 2026. Rivian and Ford vehicles gained access through separate partnerships, with Ford integration occurring through the BlueOval Charge Network.
