Isuzu Motors Limited and Toyota Motor Corporation have announced an agreement to jointly develop next-generation fuel cell (FC) route buses. This collaboration aims to expand carbon-neutral transportation options by combining the expertise of both companies in vehicle design and fuel cell technology.

A Strategic Collaboration for Zero Emissions
The foundation of the new fuel cell bus will be the flat-floor battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform developed by Isuzu. This platform, launched in fiscal year 2024, will be integrated with an advanced fuel cell system created by Toyota.
Production will take place at the Utsunomiya Plant, which is operated by J-Bus, Ltd., a joint venture between Isuzu and Hino Motors, Ltd. This leverages an existing manufacturing relationship to streamline the production process for the new vehicles.
Standardization and Cost Reduction
A key objective of the Isuzu-Toyota partnership is to lower manufacturing costs. By standardizing parts between the battery electric bus platform and the new fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), the companies aim to make zero-emission public transportation more accessible. This strategy is central to expanding the range of commercially viable, carbon-neutral options beyond traditional BEVs.

Both companies are committed to achieving carbon neutrality.
